

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Boulevard with interment to follow with military honors in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Neal was born April 19, 1925, in Etowah, TN, the son of the late Ross and Della Shoemaker. At the age of 18, he began proudly serving his country in the Army and was soon in the Philippines. He did four landings and the fifth landing was in Japan after the bombing in Hiroshima. He was awarded many medals, the American Theater Campaign Medal, Pacific Theater Campaign Medal, three Bronze Service Stars, Philippine Liberation Theater Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal. He actually received these medals many years later by Howard Coble. Neal worked for Central Oil Company for close to 30 years and also owned Starmount Filling Station. Until his retirement, he worked for Bain Oil Company and worked security for the Greensboro Coliseum part time after he retired and somewhere in there when he had time, he coached Lewis Concrete a little league baseball team. He enjoyed playing golf, keeping his yard clean and neat, being with his family at the beach in the summers and watching all sports especially when his sons and grandchildren played.
In addition to his parents, Neal was preceded in death by his brothers, Walbert (Doodles), James and Lee Shumaker. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Grace Shoemaker; sons, and daughters-in-law, James Thomas and Sandy Shoemaker, Richard Neal and Kathie Shoemaker, Harry Dennis Shoemaker; sisters; Kathleen Albright, Frances Sessons, Maxine Jennings, Evelyn Landrum; brother, Bobby Shumaker; grandchildren, Lynn, Todd, Chase Shoemaker, Blair Henn, Rick, Chris Shoemaker and great grandchildren, Drew, Nolan, Brandon Holt, Marcus, Zack, Madison Shoemaker, Nathaniel, Carson Henn and Graci Shoemaker.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics, 3409 West Wendover Avenue, #B, Greensboro, NC 27407.
