Sandra was born in Leland, Mississippi in 1941 to her parents, William Fortenberry and Geneva Clevenger. She was one of five children.
Sandra was a voracious reader of literature, a life-long student, and dedicated educator. She began her higher education at Anderson University where she was class president, and ultimately graduated from Indiana State University with a Bachelor’s degree Cum Laude while raising two young sons. Additionally, she received a Master’s degree from Radford University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Student Personal Services from Virginia Tech.
Professionally, Sandra began her career teaching English at Kilmarnok High School in Virginia. In 1973, she moved to North Carolina to work for both the Burlington City and Alamance County School Systems. She began as a School Psychologist, and eventually was promoted to become the first Director of Exceptional Children for Alamance County. Later, she also worked in Mount Airy and Guilford County as a School Psychologist.
Sandra is survived by her husband of 30 years, Charles (Chuck) Morris, her children Scott and Kevin Dill, stepdaughter Jennifer Biever, and brother, Russell Fortenberry. Sandra was a dedicated grandmother with eight grandchildren living in South Carolina, Colorado, and California. On their many journeys to visit family, Sandra and Chuck travelled to forty nine of the fifty states. New Mexico, where Sandra spent time during her childhood, was a frequent stop and one of their favorite places to explore local artists.
In addition to her academic and professional writings, Sandra celebrated the release of her first novel, “Mud Pies, Moon Pies, and Caramel Corn,” in 2023. The book celebrates the inner strength, determination, and fortitude that Sandra exemplified throughout her life.
“I’d sat on an old log gazing out on Walden Pond, incredulous that I was sitting in such a famed literary spot. Emerson, Thoreau, the Alcotts, Nathaniel Hawthorne – for me, they were present in the air I was breathing.”
The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to Rose Hill for her compassion, guidance, and care to both Sandra and her family over the last three years. Also, thanks to the Authoracare Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy @ https://www.psp.org.
