1946-2015
Typically, the first things people noticed about Sharyn Starr Harold Lowe were her sparkling smile and perky disposition, but the thing they remembered was her compassion. She rarely met a stranger, carrying on a family tradition of making friends wherever she went. She died just before sunrise on December 23, 2015; her contagious smile will be missed by many.
Born January 12, 1946 to L.G. and Lois Holland Harold, she was a surprise (of sorts) joining an older sister, Joyce, who preceded her by twenty years. Sharyn married William R. (Bill) Lowe on December 22, 1963 before graduating from Granite Falls High School in spring 1964. While raising two children, she earned a bachelor’s degree from UNC Greensboro and later a master’s in education from Appalachian State University. She joined the ranks of heroes and heroines tirelessly teaching in the NC public school system from 1978 until her retirement. She never stopped teaching those around her however, including two daughters, two sons-in-law, and four adored grandchildren.
Sharyn courageously and whole-heartedly fought neuroendocrine carcinoma and its aftermath for the past year. She was so very grateful for the love and support she received from friends and relatives—far and near—and for the Sisters and staff at Pennybyrne Retirement Community, particularly the team at Hayworth House who continue to care for her husband.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughters, Michelle Lowe Solér and Allison Starr Lowe Reed; sons-in-law Joe Solér and Banning Reed; and grandchildren Will Solér, Aidan Reed, Leo Solér, and Charlotte Reed.
There is a small private family funeral on Dec. 30, 2015 at First Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC. There will also be a celebration of a life well-lived on Jan. 9, 2016 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Ilderton Hall at Pennybyrne Retirement Community.
When asked why she wanted to get married in December while still a senior in high school Sharyn said she choose the month because her favorite color was red—and her bridesmaids indeed wore red. We can only guess that she’d say the same thing again, so as you are inclined, please send red flowers to: Hayworth House, Pennybyrne at Maryfield Retirement Community, 109 Penny Rd, High Point, NC 27260.
