

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27407, with Pastor Robert Keatts, officiating. The family will receive friends and loved ones immediately following the service in the funeral home’s reception hall. Ms. Shirley will be laid to rest in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born in Mebane, NC on February 17, 1935, to the late Dewey Albert Owen and Mary Ellen Patton Owen, Shirley was a long-time member of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church. In her younger years, she loved cooking, gardening, playing the piano and singing. At one point, she was part of the Owen Sister’s Trio Gospel Group which was broadcasted on the radio. She enjoyed walking with her neighbors, being involved with family activities, but most of all she enjoyed doing her Bible studies and worshipping The Lord. Shirley and her husband Zeke, like traveling the world, experiencing different cultures and exploring God’s amazing creations. During her working years, she was an English teacher and learned a lot through reading and teaching her students. After her husband passed away, Shirley was able to have in-home caregivers and continued to make a special impact on each person she met. She leaves behind a legacy of memories and most of all, her family will miss her prayers and her singing “Happy Birthday” to each and every one of her loved ones, on their birthday. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ezekiel Hoover Hull; her son, Charles Timothy Hull; sister, Dewey Owen Jones; and brother, Donald Albert Owen.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Cynthia Hull Swaim and her husband, Grant, Amy Hull Watson and her husband, Samuel, and Jane Hull McIntire and her husband, Mark; grandchildren, Jamie Loy (Brent), Dylan Watson, and Derek McIntire, and Joey Watson (his girlfriend, Kate Hoffman, and their baby girl, Luna), great-grandchildren, Natalie Loy, and Grant Loy; sisters, Ellen Wilson and Betty Jean Suther; and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.
