He emigrated from Greece to the United States of America at the age of 13 to escape a brutal civil war and to seek opportunities for a better life. He proudly served in the Korean War with the United States Army. Prior to serving in the Army, he worked for his grandfather at his restaurant in Greenville, NC. He later moved to New York where he worked in several restaurants including the famous Italian Restaurant, Mamma Leone's where he acquired his cooking skills bringing them to North Carolina to open up his own restaurant. He owned and co-owned several restaurants in High Point, NC before opening the Flamenco Restaurant in Greensboro in 1969. In 1984, he opened the Pavilion Restaurant in Greensboro which continues to serve its patrons to this day.
Spiros was a faithful servant of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in High Point, where he served as Parish Council President for many years and was instrumental in various church projects, especially the popular church Spaghetti Dinner fundraisers.
On September 19, 1957, he married the love of his life, Katina Perrou who preceded him in death on December 24, 2015. He is survived by his loving children, Phillip (Zoe) Nixon, Roula Nixon, Georgia Nixon Roney, and Angela Nixon Brooks; his adoring grandchildren, Victoria (Ben) Bailess, Katina Kefalianos, Spiros Nixon, Stefano (Harlee Warner) Kefalianos, Elaina Roney, Hannah Roney, Narena Brooks, Melea Brooks, Alexander Nixon; and his precious great-grandchildren, Sia Bailess, Phillip.Bailess and Alexis Bailess; his dear sister-in-law, Kiki Perrou Hassapelis; his loving niece, Sophia (Tom|) Hassaspelis Smith; sisters, Anthoula (Pete) Nicopoulos Sklapanis and Maria Nicopoulos Gatsis, and a host of nieces, nephews, along with their spouses and children.
Stories of Spiros' time spent in the Army, his experiences in New York, and his early life in Greece will be missed by many. Las Vegas was his favorite vacation destination where he and his beloved wife made lasting memories together. Spiros especially enjoyed bringing his family together by preparing family feasts that included all of his favorite foods. He was a firm believer in bonding over a good meal. Whether it was going out to lunch for sushi after church on Sunday, celebrating family birthdays at Asahi Japanese restaurant, or splurging at one of his favorite restaurants, (The Angus Barn), many happy family memories were made while sharing food together. His passing leaves a huge void in many lives but his memory will live on through the multitude of life experiences that we shared with him. May his memory be eternal.
Special thanks to Spiros’s pallbearers, Spiros Nixon, Stefano Kefalianos, Alexander Nixon, Ben Bailess, Stephen Hooper, and David Speaks. Honorary pallbearers, Freddie Faulk, Robert Pennix and Eric Kimball.
