Miss Susan Perry Kirk, aged 76, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Jan. 16th at Sherwood Park Care Home, Aberdeen, NC. A graveside service at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3901 Forest Lawn Drive, Greensboro, is planned for March 19th at 2pm.
Susan was the daughter of the late Lt Benjamin Harold Kirk, Patton's Third Army, WWII, and Betty Amelia Perry Kirk, both families long time Greensboro residents. She is survived by her sisters, Curry K Walker, Litchfield, CT and Dr Rebecca K Starr, Litchfield, CT and Eastington, Gloucestershire, England.
Susan made her home with her mother in Greensboro until she moved in 1991 to Chisholm Homes in High Point. Though 'differently abled' from birth, Susan was far from disabled. She achieved well beyond expectations, leading a full and challenging life with her second family, Penny and Herbert Chisholm. Susie won numerous ribbons for her achievements in the North Carolina 'Special Olympics', being particularly dedicated to her favorite sport, ten pin bowling. A lover of music, she sang in the High Point ARC Choir for many years. She also took special pride in her work at the Guilford County Sheltered Workshop. The money she earned there bought extra treats for herself and Christmas presents for those she loved, as well giving her a sense of independence. But she was never happier than when traveling, accompanying her sisters on trips to Bulgaria, England, Germany, and with her group home friends to the Caribbean. She loved paying family visits to her uncle and aunt Bob and Wynnona Kirk in Winchester, VA, her cousins Dale McCorvey and Kirby Maram in Boone, NC, the late Marynell and Tom Eaddy at Lakes at Litchfield, SC, and her High cousins in Brunswick County, VA. Her favorite destination was undoubtedly the beaches of SC and NC, where she pursued her second favorite sport, sea fishing from the long piers, until a fall and two broken hips confined her to a wheelchair for her last two years. We are especially grateful to the staff at Sherwood Park in Aberdeen for their care and attention.
A devoted family member, Susan also took pleasure in following the news of her niece Amelia (Amy) Starr of New York City and Litchfield, CT, and nephews Retired U S Army CW5 Chris Walker of Raleigh, NC and Saudi Arabia, and Francis Starr of Avon, CT. Her sweet nature and ready smile belied a strong spirit and opinions when moved to express them. We will all miss Susan whose life was a blessing to those who knew her.
Memorial contributions in Susan’s memory may be made to the ARC of Greensboro, arcg.org.
