Mr. Sanford was born on May 27, 1954 in Charlotte, NC to Charlie and Thelma Sanford. He grew up in and around Randleman, NC, where he was a member of First United Methodist Church. There Mr. Sanford had a dedicated and successful career in Scouting, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and the prestigious McGlowhon Award, and has fond memories of Philmont and other Scouting adventures.
He graduated from UNC-CH with degrees in chemistry and psychology in 1976. He lived for several years in Raleigh, and was an environmental scientist for NCDENR, RTI, Indus Corp. and Sanford Consulting. He married the love of his life, Marlene Ann Moffitt, also from Randleman, on April 21, 1995 in Orlando, FL. The Sanfords moved to Greensboro, NC in 1999, where Wally retired from UNC-G and his second career in IT.
Mr. Sanford is survived by his loving family: his wife, Marlene Sanford of Greensboro; his mother Thelma Pait Sanford; sister, Jo Anne Sanford (Billy Brewer); and niece Charlotte Brewer, all of Raleigh. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Waldo "Charlie" Sanford.
Wally is remembered by his friends and family as an impressive intellect, a quick wit, a great cook, a warm host, a helping hand, a charming friend, a voracious reader, Mensa member, a true renaissance man. He gleefully whisked his bride away on many travels in a quest to see all the greatest places of the world. He loved his friends, family and cats dearly, and they loved him back in equal measure.
A celebration of his life will be held on October 3 at 1:00 p.m. at West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro, reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to serve those in need at Fellowship Hall, Greensboro Urban Ministries, Old North State Council Boy Scouts or Guilford County Animal Shelter.
