A service of remembrance will be held at Green Hill cemetery on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 11:00 am, with Billy’s cousin, The Rev. Canon Marty Hedgpeth officiating. Immediately following the service, there will be a reception at Holy Trinity Church.
Billy was the beloved son of parents Margaret Woodson and Sherwood (Shep) Hedgpeth, Sr., both deceased. Billy was also preceded in death by his brother, Sherwood Hedgpeth, Jr. and sister, Brent Hedgpeth Hamilton. Billy is survived by his nephew, Lee Hamilton of Denver, CO, his aunt, Brent Woodson Holderness Elmore of Chapel Hill, NC, uncle, James Hedgpeth of Concord, many cousins and countless loving friends.
Billy was a lifetime resident of Greensboro. Born with Down Syndrome in 1956, Billy’s parents worked in the community to ensure Billy had opportunities in all phases of life. As a result, Billy graduated from McIver School and later in life took computer classes at GTCC. Billy also had work opportunities including having worked for the Sheltered Workshop. For the twelve years prior to his decline in health, Billy worked for Ham’s American Bar and Grill at the Palladium in High Point. At Ham’s, Billy worked as a greeter and in whatever capacity he could that would be a help; Billy loved to help others. The staff at Ham’s were wonderful friends to Billy and included him in parties and New Year’s Eve celebrations.
As a young person, Billy participated in Special Olympics. He also attended Camp Joy and Sky Ranch Camp. Billy was a long time member of the “Happy Hearts Class” at First Baptist Church. Besides church school classes, Billy enjoyed many activities with this class including weekend retreats.
Billy loved music and movies and amazed others with his talent for remembering intricate details of the performers, musicians and authors. Billy also loved to spend time at the beach. During his childhood and youth, Billy enjoyed trips to Sunset Beach with his family. He also enjoyed dining out, soap operas, professional wrestling and word find puzzles.
In the late 90’s, Billy moved to a group home operated by the ARC of High Point, which later transitioned to a Monarch facility. Both organizations provided a wonderful home for Billy, where he resided with friends and was attended to by caring staff members. Due to his declining health, he moved to obtain the care he needed. Most recently, Billy resided at Whitestone Wellness facility.
If you met Billy one time, you knew what a joyful person he was. Billy never complained. Instead he was always smiling and had a warm, kind smile that drew others to him. Billy was happiest, enjoying the company of others. Billy brought happiness to all that knew him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to “Happy Hearts” Sunday School Class, First Baptist Church, 1000 W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27401 or to Monarch/Andrea Drive Group Home, 350 Peedee Avenue, Albemarle, NC 28001.
