

Alice Marie Gartin Goddard was born on March 18, 1917 in Burney, Indiana. She was the daughter of Colonel Earl F. and Elsie Gartin. She graduated from Greensburg High School in 1934 where she was a varsity cheerleader and participated in the orchestra where she excelled as a pianist, violinist, and accordionist.
She attended Earlham College and graduated from the Indiana Central Business College. Upon her return to Greensburg she became Deputy Clerk of the Circuit Court, where she met her husband of 67 years, John W. Goddard, a practicing attorney in Greensburg and subsequent Circuit Court Judge of thirty years. She was the deputy clerk of the Selective Service of Decatur County during World War II. Mrs. Goddard was active in the community where she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a 50 year member of P.E.O. and a member of Psi Iota Xi. She and her husband enjoyed traveling the world and participating in the many activities of their three sons. Mrs. Goddard was widely known throughout the community of Greensburg and Decatur County.
A devoted homemaker and mother, she was known for her vivacious and outgoing personality to the many that enjoyed her kindness and friendship. She truly embraced life and all it had to offer. Mrs. Goddard was an accomplished pianist and was the organist for the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg for 18 years. She provided the music for the annual state convention of P.E.O. on two occasions. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, John W. Goddard, grandson, John S. Goddard, and sister, Evelyn Clemons. She is survived by her three sons, Stephen G. Goddard, John Philip Goddard, and Alan Joe Goddard, two grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 beginning at 1:00 p.m. until the time of the Funeral service at 3:00 p.m. Rev. Dr. Steve Matthies will be officiating. Burial will follow at the South Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg.
