

Carroll Jean (Rager) Pitts 85, passed away December 31, 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Carroll was born in Columbus, IN and was the daughter of the late Florence (Rager) Cowles and Lawrence Rager. Carroll is survived by her sister, Lois Ann Shaver and brother, James E. Rager.
She was a graduate of Indiana University School of Nursing and started her career at Riley Pediatric Hospital upon graduation in 1947, during the polio epidemic following WWII. She met and married her husband, the late George L. Pitts on August 28, 1949 and settled in Terre Haute, IN. She was an active member in Union Christian Church. She was a volunteer nurse with the American Red Cross and also served as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader. She practiced nursing in the Coronary Care Unit at St. Anthony’s, which later became Terre Haute Regional Hospital. Upon retirement they resided at Lake Santee, and attended Clarksburg Christian Church near Greensburg, IN. They loved Florida and became winter birds in Lakeland, FL.
She is also survived by one daughter: Kimberly (Steve) Young of Middletown, MD; four sons: David (Claire) Pitts, Denver. CO, Dr. Douglas (Julie) Pitts, Indianapolis, IN, Rev. Drs. Mark (Beth) LaRocca-Pitts, Atlanta, GA, Eric (Neva) Pitts, Terre Haute, IN; nine grandchildren: Quentin, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Rachael, Erica, Kristin, Eleanor, and Joseph, plus four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call on Thursday, January 5, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg, IN and again on Friday, January 6 at Zion Methodist Church 5585 E County Road 300 S in Greensburg from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Jerran Jackson of Clarksburg Christian Church will officiate and burial will follow in the Zion church cemetery.
