Barbara Townsend

Barbara L. Townsend, age 92 of Sugar Island (Sault Ste. Marie), Michigan and formerly of Greenville, Ohio passed away Monday May 4, 2026, at the Cottages at Martin Lake Fremont, MI. Barbara was born February 18, 1934, in Greenville, Ohio and was the daughter of the late Earl and Vergia (Schultz) Hittle.

She loved to bake pies and enjoyed cooking in general. She enjoyed her daily 2 mile walks with her dog Sugar, boat rides on her pontoon boat and her visits with her friends at the Sugar Island Community Center. Barbara retired from Hittle GMC of Greenville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James M. Townsend on May 2, 2012. They were married on December 7, 1952. Also, by their daughter Lori Lynn Townsend in 2007; grandson James Townsend; brother Donald E. Hittle and sisters Geraldine Loy and Wilma Santaguida.

Barbara is survived by her children Linda (Dan) Nichols of Muskegon, MI, Steven M. (Karen) Townsend of Greenville, Ohio and Michael R. (Linda Posvistak) Townsend of Muskegon, MI; grandchildren Brian (Julie Lovelady) Nichols, Kent Nichols, Kevin Nichols, Joshua (Aimee) Townsend, Ashlae Belisle, Chelsea Townsend, William Townsend and Rebekah Townsend; 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday May 12, 2026, in the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Scott Gruber officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday May 11, 2026 in the funeral home.
