

He graduated from Greenville High School in 1965 and Wright State University in 1976.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Richard Labig of New Jersey. He is survived by a brother Joel Edward Labig of Colville, Washington, an aunt, Marjorie (Winn) Almonrode of Saratoga, Indiana, her children Robert and Barry Almonrode, Kathy Dilares, and Connie Campell and other first cousins Thomas (Debra) Labig of Greenville and their children , Kurt (Tiffany) Labig and Beth (Kerby) Wilcox, all of Greenville, Judith Caupp of Englewood and her daughter, Cheryl (Cory) Shockey, Chalmer Labig, Jr. of Oklahoma and Steven Unger of Florida. Other survivors include special young cousins Kie, Keeley, Kade, and Kinsley Labig and Kiersten, Kenna and Kallie Wilcox.
John served in the US Army from 1967-1970. He spent a year in Vietnam and was also stationed at Ft. Jackson, SC and Ft. Lee, VA.
He worked at Fram from 1977 until his retirement in 2010.
John dedicated much of his life to working with young speed skaters. He was well-known and respected throughout the roller speed skating community for many years. He attended every State, Great Lakes Regional and National Championship, and many invitationals, where he served as lap counter for the races. In later years, he still attended the nationals each year, watching every race. The speed skating world will miss him.
John loved traveling and camping. He had been to all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and a number of European countries, as well as Northern Africa.
He enjoyed all types of music and never missed a DCCA production. He also enjoyed the performances of Noah Back, a local musician and one-man band.
If an activity was going on anywhere in the area, you would usually find John there. Everyone knew him and he was friendly to all.
During the Darke County Fair, if the gates were open, John was probably there, sampling his favorite food and sitting in his chair in its regular place in front of the grandstand.
John was an interesting , intelligent, and friendly person who will be missed by many in the community.
Visitation will be at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home on Friday, April 1, 2022 from 12:00 PM- 2:00 PM. The service will follow at 2 PM with Rev. John McRoberts officiating. Burial will follow at Greenville Cemetery where the Greenville Honor Guard will perform military honors. The family requests donations in John’s memory to Darke County Parks District or DCCA.
