Greenville, South Carolina, Andrea was born with a twinkle in her eye on March 26, 1948 to
Moody Graham Proffitt, Jr. and Vallie Kelley Proffitt. Andrea was the fourth of five children, all of
whom were completely adored by her parents. Comically, Andrea’s childhood tendency to
accuse every questionable speck of being a bug earned her the nickname that would stick for
life: Bug. Even Andrea’s grandchildren referred to her as Buggie.
Andrea grew up in Greenville, making friends and having fun. She loved her friends like family, and kept them for life. Andrea was a 1967 graduate of Greenville High School (where she met Jimmy, the love of her life), and went on to attend Brenau College before marrying James “Jim” Morgan League, Jr. in 1969.
With her rare combination of beauty, grace, and spunky sass, Andrea loved to dance. She
taught dance with her younger sister “Teedee” at Barbara Selvy Dance Arts before moving on to
teach a decade’s worth of Greenville’s children the joy of dance at the Andrea League Studio of
Dance from 1982 to 1992. Andrea loved and taught all forms of dance, including South
Carolina’s own Shag.
Andrea was right at home tailgating and watching Clemson Tiger football games. Her tailgate spreads were delicious and perfect, drawing family and friends to sit and laugh together, making memories for a lifetime.
Andrea loved the sparkle of New York City, but the South Carolina coast called to her. She loved the relaxing times she spent at the beach (and she equally loved the not-relaxing times when her grandchildren were toddlers, calling, “Buggie! Watch!” and “Buggie! Look!”.) She was not an early riser, but if it meant getting to see a new sea turtle nest, or watching the baby hatchlings make their way to the ocean, Andrea would rise, coffee in hand, to make her way down to the water.
Andrea loved Clemson football, shopping, country music, shopping, traveling with Jimmy and finding new places to shop, and shopping. Seriously - Andrea was an expert shopper with the finest taste, and she passed that love down to her granddaughters. Andrea was a beauty no matter what she wore, but regardless, she was always put together, coordinated, and cute. When her family visited, Andrea knew that while her grandsons were likely out playing in the yard, her granddaughters had probably found a way to sneak into her dreamy closet to try on her shoes, touch her dresses, and hold her purses.
Andrea may have enjoyed the finer things, but she was not afraid to cook her Farmers’ Market
finds. Somehow Andrea had the magical cooking skills that took a dreaded staple of childhood -
lima beans - and made them into buttery morsels of yumminess. Her grandchildren simply
referred to them as “Bug Beans,” and they did not consider a meal complete without those or a
family-famous Buggie Macaroni. Sharing a meal (and maybe a little wine) with family and
friends was likely one of Bug’s most joyful things to do.
Andrea was predeceased by her parents, a brother, Charles Kelley Proffitt, and her two sisters, Valerie Proffitt Buice and Frances “Teedee” Proffitt Carter. Bug’s loyal, fierce love lives on in her family and friends. She is survived by her doting husband Jim, to whom she was married for nearly 53 years. She is also survived by her children, Chris League (Sally), and Annie Schell (Matt), along with her six grandchildren: Betsy, Caroline, Nathan, Jay, Suzy, and Anna Grace; as well as her big brother, Moody Graham Proffitt III.
A visitation for Andrea will be held at Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church, 207 Mitchell Rd Greenville, SC 29615 on Friday April 29th from 12:00 PM to 1:15 PM at with a funeral service immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Andrea League’s name may be sent to Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church, Greenville SC, or Blue Ridge Community Fellowship, Seneca SC.
