A lifelong resident of Greenville County, she was the daughter of the late Walter Barger and Sarah Green Barger. Ann dedicated 36 years faithfully working for the South Carolina Employment Security Commission in Greenville and Spartanburg Counties, retiring as a supervisor in 2008.
Ann was known for her warm, kind, friendly and compassionate personality. A lifelong animal lover, she spent her post-retirement years focused on feeding, rescuing, adopting, spaying and neutering cats throughout the area. She provided sanctuary to cats who had no hope of adoption. Her tireless efforts contributed to improving the lives of thousands of cats in the Upstate.
She is survived by her beloved son Chris O’Brien, his wife Veena Mathur O’Brien, and Veena’s children. She leaves behind a multitude of cats including her beloved Oreo, and her Great Pyrenees dog, Shelly, who dutifully protected them.
Services for Ann will be held at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn at 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609 on Monday, August 18, 2025 at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Paved Paws Animal League (pavedpaws.com).
