Born November 2, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Parks Hope and Rosetta Davis Hope of Charlotte, NC. Having lived in Taylors, SC since 1979, she was a devoted member of Taylors First Baptist Church. Carolyn was the wife of the late Bobby B. Caldwell for 52 years and was preceded in death by her son, David Scott Caldwell. She is survived by her daughter and best friend, Melanie Caldwell Garrett, of Taylors, SC. Carolyn is also survived by her two adoring grandsons, Dustin O'Bryan (Kori) Caldwell of Marietta, GA and Daniel Evan (Amanda) Garrett of Piedmont, SC. Carolyn had two precious great granddaughters, Amelia Hope Caldwell and Lorelai Grace Garrett, with one more Garrett granddaughter on the way.
Carolyn graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, NC. She fell in love with her sweetheart at age 15 at Midwood Baptist Church in Charlotte and was determined to wait on him to return from his overseas Army service during the Korean War. The family cherishes many of the love letters they exchanged during this time.
At age 17 she went right to work. One of her first positions was with Douglas Aircraft's Missile Plant in Charlotte. After marriage, the couple was transferred almost every 2 1/2 years with her husband's company, International Harvester Corporation. Carolyn had numerous jobs due to these moves. While living in Willingboro, NJ, she worked for Rancocas Valley Hospital. One of her favorite jobs was working for a Wilderness Recovery Program for youth and adolescent boys with emotional problems outside of Atlanta. Once they moved to the Greenville area, she worked for Internal Medicine Associates and retired in 2001 after 23 years of service. She loved meeting new people and helping others whenever she could.
Though Carolyn wasn't one to receive a lot of accolades on this Earth, she will be honored in Heaven for her deep faith and trust in the Lord. What a lot of people don't know about her is that she chose to be a faithful caregiver to family members, to work, and be an excellent homemaker. Carolyn was an scrumptious cook and made sure the family always had delicious meals every day. In the home, she cared for her mother-in-law for 5 years, her father for 10 years, and her son for 14 years while caring for her husband who was suffering from a debilitating disease the last 2 1/2 years of his life. She was faithful to volunteer and do whatever she could in the numerous Baptist Churches she attended. Meanwhile, she found the time to play an integral role in the upbringing of her two grandsons. They are the fine young men they are today due in large part to the Lord and Carolyn's unending love, care, faith, wisdom and guidance.
Her legacy will continue in the hearts of those who knew her because she loved deeply, cared fiercely, gave generously and was truly devoted to those she loved! Carolyn was a little mischievous, funny, witty and had her own special sayings. She was an avid gardener, played the piano, talented seamstress and lover of dogs. Most of all, she loved the Lord with all her heart.
Visitation will begin at noon on Saturday, October 14, 2023, in the vestibule behind the Chapel of Taylors First Baptist Church, located at 200 West Main Street, Taylors, SC 29687. Visitation will be followed by a 1:00 PM service in the TFBC Chapel and the burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1901 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29615.
