Dean was born in Muncie, Indiana on February 2,1937. His family moved to Toledo, Ohio where he grew up, but Dean spent many happy summers in Muncie on his aunt and uncle’s farm where he was driving tractors as early as age 11. Dean graduated from the University of Toledo where he was an active ROTC member, and went on to serve in the Army and Army Reserves. He attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant and served as a tank commander. He was a business owner and licensed contractor.
At 18, Dean first met Kay, 16, during a youth group bowling event and that was the beginning of their 67 years together. They married in Toledo in 1960 and were blessed with four children. Dean enjoyed life and was always up for an adventure. He loved ice cream, dogs, his Winnebago and, above all, his family.
Dean and Kay both accepted Christ as their Savior in 1976, changing the course of their lives together. Dean was a loving husband and father; generous and kind with a servant’s heart.
He was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Toledo and then Morningside Baptist Church after moving to Greenville in 1992. While at Morningside, Dean served on six mission trips, founded the Intercessor Prayer Group and was a regular greeter at the Welcome Center, alongside Kay.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Allan R. Whitney. In addition to his wife Kay, he is survived by his four children; Leslie (Neil) Black; Joanna (David) Wells; Jeff (Melinda) McCreery; Jill (John) Eells, along with ten grandchildren; Zachary (Kelsey) Black, Carleigh (Austin) Kaminski; Olivia, Jackson, Grace and Samuel Wells; Nathan, Caleb and Sarah Eells, and Emily McCreery, as well three great-grandchildren; Haven and Decker Kaminski and Adelyn Black.
A visitation for Dean will be held Saturday, November 19, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM at Morningside Baptist Church, 1115 Pelham Road, Greenville, SC 29615, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at the church.
