Born on July 6, 1934 in Great Falls, SC, he was the son of the late Robert Harold Turner, Sr. and Louise Gambrell Turner.
Don’s early life was marked by his family’s moves across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia due to his father’s work in the textile industry. One of the most significant chapters of his youth was when the family lived in Cayo la Rosa, Cuba, during his middle school years. This experience left an enduring impression on Don, one he often recalled fondly throughout his life. Ultimately, the family settled in Taylors, SC.
While in high school, Don developed a passion for boxing, competing in the Golden Gloves Featherweight Class. His remarkable skills in the ring earned him a college scholarship, and it was during this time that he met his beloved wife, Lois Ann Turner. They were married in January of 1956, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love and mutual respect.
Don attended Clemson University for two years before being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served in West Germany for 18 months. After his military service, Don and Lois became charter members of Edwards Road Baptist Church, where Don served as a deacon, demonstrating his deep faith and commitment to his community.
In 1994, Don retired after a long and successful career in Marketing and Sales with BellSouth. Following retirement, he found great joy in traveling and dedicated much of his time to volunteering with Meals on Wheels, delivering meals to those in need for many years.
Don was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He took immense pride in his family, always attending his daughters' and grandchildren's events and activities to show his unwavering support. Described by all who knew him as one of the nicest, most genuine, and devoted gentlemen, Don’s kindness and humility were hallmarks of his character.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Lois Ann Turner; daughters Tammy Turner Mangum and Donna Turner Schmieding (Doug); grandchildren Jordan Schmieding (David Schneider), William Schmieding (Kate), and Mary Kate Mangum Trively (Logan); brother Robert Harold (Hal) Turner Jr. (Carolette); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Bobby Jean Bullock, Betsy Moore, and his son-in-law, Mike Mangum.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held on January 9, 2025, at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive Greenville, SC 29609. Visitation will be held at 2:00 followed by a service at 3:00.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Meals on Wheels, Edwards Road Baptist Church, or Providence Hospice in Don’s memory.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of The Gables on Pelham and Providence Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and care during Don’s final days.
Don’s legacy of love, kindness, and devotion will be carried on by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
