Doris Howie Pratt (Little Doris), 81 of Greenville South Carolina went to be with the Lord after a courageous 9 year long battle with cancer. Doris was a computer programmer in the Data Entry department of Liberty Life Insurance of Greenville for 42 years. She was an accomplished pianist and a life-long member of The First Presbyterian Church of Greenville. Doris has a deep love for Greenville and the memories growing up with her 3 sisters, all receiving her, Sandra Moseley (Husband Jim Moseley), Helen Wallace(Husband John Wallace), and Linda Medline (Husband Gene Medline). She attended Greenville High School and then married her husband of 32 years, Robert (Bob) Joel Pratt who passed away suddenly in 1995. Together they had 3 children all surviving her, son Robert Gregory Pratt (wife Melissa Pratt) and grandchild Jarrett Gregory Pratt; her daughter Kristy Cassandra Fowler(Husband Brian Thomas Fowler), grandchildren Kasey Melissa, Brian Jacob, and Abigail Kate Fowler and; her daughter Stacy Newland Daniel and grandchildren Jason Joel and Amber Leigh Newland. Step grandchildren Kallie Evans, Ashley, Meghan Marvin and Lindsey Marvin; great grandchildren Colton, John, Landon. Step great grandchildren, Dawson, Micah and Emmie.
The simplest pleasures in life brought the greatest joy to Doris. She loved rides to the mountains with her parents, David Houston Howie (Papa) and Doris Sherman Howie (Mama), both preceding her, always on the hunt for the next waterfall and picnic. Summer was her favorite time of the year. Whether it was taking a picnic up to the mountains or going for a drive with her loved ones she always made the most of the summer days. She was always planning or scheming a way for her, Linda, and Helen to find a way to Beaufort to the Water Festival. Doris had a life-long love affair with hot dogs, George Strait and Patrick Swayze because “No one puts baby in the corner!”. She lived her life truly never wanting to grow up. She took great pride in having the most psychedelic Christmas lights anyone could find hanging proudly on her tree. She believed alongside Papa that “Sunsets are the most beautiful show on earth and they are free!”. Doris drank her coffee black every morning, and started the day out by sitting with Bella, her favorite furry couch buddy.
Material things weren't important to her except the infamous “Million dollar and a fur coat” she wished for every time she bought a lottery ticket. She didn't have a lot but she would truly give you everything she had if it would help you, especially her children and grandchildren.
She loved playing rummy and being crowned “Queen for the day!”. She loved watching musicals and then getting all her favorite people to watch the same musicals over again with her. She would host ALL late night monopoly marathons with immense joy each and every game, she was always the banker.
Her talents as mom included, but were not limited to; reading the books “The Lady with the Sausage on the End of her Nose” (we laughed SO much) or “Brer, Bear & Brer Rabbit” OVER and OVER and OVER, her endless dedication to being the “Lions” team mom, lending her arm to hold, to one scared child so she could fall asleep EVERY night, allowing her kids to roller skate INSIDE the house (That was awesome!!!), enjoying loud race cars and tolerating the Wizard of Oz EVERY time it came on. But most of all, the way she loved her children to pieces and teaching them her love for Jesus and how to love one another.
Doris loved life, her family and her faith. I truly believe she had a direct line to God, and you didn't have to be around her very long to see it. She would have done anything for her children and grand-children and they were definitely the most important thing in the world to her. If you had ever met Doris, even as sick as she was, she would be the first to ask how you were doing, she was truly that selfless. I never knew anyone who didn't love her or that she didn't love right back. She made our little home the greatest place on earth, full of memories we will never forget.
We are sure she is on a beach in Heaven right about now, listening to her favorite Jimmy Buffett songs and hoping to win “Queen for the Day!!”.
We love you with ALL our hearts and we are so incredibly blessed that you were OURS. We know the days ahead will be difficult but know that we will take care of each other as you have taught us to and honor you by living each day to the fullest.
Services for Doris will be held Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church Greenville, 200 W. Washington St., Greenville, SC 29601. Visitation at 12:00 PM followed by the funeral at 1:30 PM. Burial will be immediately after the funeral at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609.
