

Reverend Dwight Wallace Hughey, 95, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, educator, and pastor, was received by His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 15, 2015.
Married fifty-eight years to the love of his life, the late Helen Hope Freeman Hughey, he was born in Easley, South Carolina to the late James Obie Hughey and the late Mae Couch Hughey.
He grew up in church with his family, accepted Christ as his Savior as a young child, and was ordained in the Georges Creek Baptist Church. Reverend Hughey graduated from North Greenville Academy, Furman College, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was pastor to several churches in Indiana while a student at the seminary and in this area through the years including Sandy Springs Baptist Church, Oak Crest Baptist Church, and Rock Springs Baptist Church. He also taught at Parker High School, taught Physics and Chemistry to Veterans at Parker High School, and was Director of the Preschool Program of Pickens County School until he retired. After retiring from the ministry, he was a member of First Baptist Church Greenville where he and his wife enjoyed worshiping with their family. They were devoted Furman fans and as members of the Paladin Club enjoyed all athletic events with their children and grandchildren. He acquired the love for travel from the many books that he read with his mother during his elementary school years. He enjoyed travel with his family, friends, and later in retirement with his wife.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Helen Maxwell (Pinckney) and Patricia Atkinson (Dr. Charles); four grandchildren, Anna Maria Cowart (Dr. Jay), Dr. John Maxwell (Meredith) of Charleston, SC, Anne Louise Yarbrough (Spence) of Atlanta, Ga., and Cameron Preston (Jeff) of Palm Beach, Fla.; and eight great grandchildren, Amelia Cowart, Maxwell Cowart, Madeleine Maxwell, Stone Maxwell, Rivers Maxwell, Anne Marshall Yarbrough John Charles Preston, and Emerson Preston. He was preceded in death by one brother, Mills Hunter Hughey, and four sisters, Lois Gaines, Lillian Sutton, Nan West, and Evelyn Tilman.
The family would like to express their love to Kay, Anna, Betty, Pam, Dee, Vicki, Sheila, Gloria, Marlene, Diane, and to the Lutheran Hospice.
Services will be held Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in the Carpenter Chapel of First Baptist Church with the Reverend Baxter Wynn officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
