Born in Blacksburg, South Carolina, Ed was the son of the late Zeb Thompson and Margeary Ellis Thompson. He graduated from Edmunds High School in Sumter, South Carolina, and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Nancy Thompson, with whom he shared a beautiful and richly lived life. Together, Ed and Nancy created a lifetime of memories rooted in love, laughter, and adventure. One of their greatest joys was spending four wonderful years traveling the country in their RV, embracing the freedom of the open road. Nancy will always treasure the memories of their journeys through Colorado, New Mexico, and across the country—experiences that reflected their shared spirit of curiosity and togetherness.
Ed is also survived by his son, Aaron Thompson; Tracey Thompson, and Roth. He leaves behind his sister, Joan Van Winkle (David), and his brother, James “Jim” Thompson. Ed is also very affectionately survived by his loyal Papillon and constant companion, Gracie, who was truly his best friend.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Thompson and John Thompson.
Ed was an exceptionally gifted woodworker whose hands created beauty and meaning. From wooden crosses to finely crafted pepper grinders, his work was often given as gifts or donated, touching many lives and reflecting his generous heart.
Ed retired from GE Medical Systems in 2004 and later from Nihon Kohden in 2010. In retirement, he embraced time with family, woodworking, and the adventures he shared with Nancy.
A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at a later date.
In honor of Ed, and in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to cancer research, an animal charity of your choice, or that a tree be planted in his memory.
