Garvice was born on September 13, 1936 in Fort Mill, SC to Ruth Helen Denton Chapman and Garvice H.
Chapman, Sr. He is a graduate of Calhoun Falls High School in Calhoun Falls, SC. Garvice served in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years, and was honorably discharged on October 7, 1974. He served in Vietnam for 10 months. He received the following recognitions during the course of his military career: Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Good Conduct Medal (multiple years), and Meritorious Unit Citation.
Garvice is survived by his wife, Mary Edna Pettigrew Chapman, daughter Theresa Jan Mohlenhoff, her spouse Eric Mohlenhoff and two grandchildren, Justin Mohlenhoff and Sarah Mohlenhoff. He was preceded in death by his parents.
After a funeral service for family and friends, Garvice will be laid to rest at Greenville Memorial Gardens in Piedmont, SC.
