He was the first of two sons born to the late Winne Dorothy Bruton and James Livingston Bruton. He was raised in Fremont, North Carolina.
James graduated from North Carolina State University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He later received his MBA at the University of Richmond in 1972 and pursued a wide-ranging career in business managing and developing companies specializing in plastics and chemicals. In his research and development, James received two patents for fibers and polyester.
He loved baseball, basketball, golf, hunting, and fishing, but no sport came closer to his heart than NC State's football team. Go Pack!
James was a faithful Christian who treated all with kindness, respect, and dignity. He attended Buncombe Street United Methodist Church and was part of the Seekers group. In addition, James was involved with Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity.
James is survived by his wife of 55 years Cynthia Bruton and his two daughters, Gwen Daughtry and her husband Ed Daughtry of Greenville, SC, and Susan Spence of Ridgewood, NJ. James enjoyed and loved his five grandchildren: James Daughtry, Ben Daughtry, Dean Spence, Lauren Spence, and Courtney Spence. Together, they spent many happy summers at the beach with "Papa and Grandma" and treasure many happy memories. He is also survived by his brother Charles Vincent Bruton and his wife Faye Bruton, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service for James will be held Tuesday, August 31, 2021 from 11:00 AM at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, 200 Buncombe St, Greenville, SC 29601.
