Jean was the third child born to her parents, Dewey and Josephine Bond in Belmont, Ohio in 1929. She grew up with four siblings that all worked together at Bond’s Orchards, their family business.
While in grade school, Jean received the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized in the creek near her country Methodist Church. In high school, she was valedictorian of her graduating class and served as class president.
Jean majored in Domestic Sciences at Muskingum University where she was selected as her Society President as well as a campus honor society. She was also a member of the University’s Queen’s Court in her Senior year. After graduating in 1951, she married her college sweetheart and classmate William Sponseller. Over the subsequent years, they brought four children into the world, Heidi, Becky, David and Paul. Jean was a regular Sunday School teacher and was loved and adored by many of the girls she taught.
During her working years, Jean became an expert tailor in a wide variety of textile construction. She applied these skills as an instructor in various Christian schools as well as tailoring for a nationally prominent couturier. Finally, Jean served for twenty-three years as construction supervisor in Bob Jones University’s Costume Room. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching and nurturing the students that she worked with over the years.
At home, Jean constructed and sold hundreds of hand-crafted, heirloom quality teddy bears along with her sister Janet in their partnership KEEPSAKE TEDDIES. In addition, she created many keepsakes and clothing articles for family and friends.
Jean loved to be with people and was most joyous when she was serving others. Having trusted the Lord as Savior, she demonstrated His Love and compassion for those around her. She will be missed but continually loved by so many that had the opportunity of knowing her.
Services for Jean will be held on Monday, July 28, 2025 at Hampton Park Baptist Church, 875 State Park Rd, Greenville, SC 29609. Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral at 10:30 AM. The burial will be at 1:00 PM in Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1901 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville, SC 29609.
