Born in Hartsville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Edward J. and Beulah D. Byrd.
Jewel lived a long and full life surrounded by much family and many friends. Jewel never met a stranger. She could strike up a conversation with anyone at any time and place about any topic. Growing up on a farm with five sisters and six brothers, she learned about how to get along, work hard, and survive. She spent most of her early life raising her daughters and son while also working at several jobs in retail sales. Not long after moving to the Greenville area, she lost her husband and, soon after, took a job as an administrative technician in the pharmacy of Greenville General Hospital. When the new Greenville Memorial Hospital was opened she moved there to be closer to home. She worked there until retirement. After her retirement, she spent many years traveling with some of her sisters and brothers and volunteering at Meals on Wheels in Greenville. She also spent much time visiting friends who were homebound, driving and living independently until she was 94 years old.
Jewel was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Hartsville, and Augusta Road United Methodist Church, Pelzer.
She is survived by her two daughters, Judy O’Neal and her husband, Paul of Piedmont, Diana Dewhirst and her husband, George of Beaufort, and her son, Clarence (Chuck) Sherron, Jr. and his wife, Carol of Simpsonville; six grandchildren, Scott and Chris O’Neal, Jennifer Dewhirst, Amanda Gilbert, Michael and John Dunlap, and ten great-grandchildren, Taylor O’Neal, Cole, Camden, and Carter O’Neal, Owen Dewhirst, Riley, Lachlan, Margaret, Maison, and Ellie Dunlap.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Nellie Sherrill, Carolyn Griggs, Elizabeth Watson, Robin McClain, Harriett Peele and her brothers, Charlie Byrd, Jay Byrd, Les Byrd, Orren Byrd, Merlin Byrd, and Lanier Byrd.
The family would like to extend our special thanks to Ms. Brenda Jackson with Open Arms Hospice for her excellent and loving care of our Jewel these past four years.
