Joan Elizabeth Nest Van Pelt was born on March 25, 1938, in West New York, New Jersey, and she left this earth just as she lived her life—peacefully, surrounded by love. With her devoted husband Bob by her side, along with her children and grandchildren, Joan was gently called home.
Joan shared 67 beautiful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Bob, a testament to a life built on faith, devotion, and unwavering commitment. Together they raised three children who were the pride of her heart: Bobby Van Pelt (Lauren), Ron "Ronnie" Van Pelt (Lynn), and Robyn Thomas (Shane).
Known affectionately as "Granny", Joan's most cherished moments were with her family. She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren-Cara Harris (Preston), Will Van Pelt (Tori), Hank Thomas, Brandon Masters (Haley) and Justin Masters and by her precious great-grandchildren: Scarlett Harris, Lila Kate Van Pelt, Amelia Harris, Ella Joan Harris, Fore Van Pelt, Gracie Masters, Jayda Masters, Jace Masters and Lydia Masters. Ella Joan was lovingly named in Joan's honor, a living reminder of her legacy, love, and the deep imprint she leaves on generations to come. Her love for her family was fierce, steady, and unconditional, and her presence will forever live on in their hearts and memories.
Joan was also a devoted animal lover and found joy in the simple beauty of life. She enjoyed spending time in her sunroom each morning, quietly watching the birds and squirrels as they began their day.
One thing is certain: the trumpets sounded on January 19th as Joan was welcomed into her eternal home. We find comfort and peace in knowing she was joyfully reunited at Heaven's gates with her beloved infant son, Russell Van Pelt, whose embrace surely awaited her.
Joan lived a life marked by grace, quiet strength, and deep love. She was the heart of her family—a listener, a nurturer, a constant source of warmth and reassurance. Though we will miss her dearly here on earth, we hold tightly to the promise that this is not goodbye, but "until we meet again." In the meantime, we will carry her legacy forward through love, faith, and family-the very things she treasured most.
The family would also like to offer a heartfelt and honorable mention to Travis Ramsey of Patriot Hospice, whose compassion, dedication, and gentle care provided immeasurable comfort during Joan's transition. His kindness and support brought peace during a tender time, and we will never be able to thank Travis enough for the exceptional care he gave to Joan and her family.
A visitation will be held at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, located at 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609, on January 24, 2026, from 10:00 am to 10:45 am. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park immediately after the service.
