7/7/21 I can't believe its almost been a year since I last wrote to almost the mark. I was thinking of you as I was looking at Gateway photos tonight. I continue to wonder what happend but I realize that finding that out won't make me hurt less. You beautiful Star. I need you here too as 1 of my angels. U RASCAL. Well, it’s been a year and I’m still here crying thinking about this. I don’t think I’ll ever be over losing such a bright and beautiful star.

I wish all the new members and staff at Gateway could have met you, too. I know they would have loved you like everyone did.

I’m thinking about getting a memorial tattoo for you, but I have seen so many disasters of portrait tattoos I know I can’t do that, so I’m trying to think of what else will fit. I want to carry you with me forever.

Do you remember that time you wore your Jedi robe and got me to wear the Vader helmet, and you jumped up in the air and got Chimere to take the picture at just the right moment so it looked like I was using the Force? I still show that to people when I talk about you. Just another of those amazing memories you left me with.

Oh, and I am writing a book right now that, when/if it gets published, I plan to dedicate it to you. I’m a slow writer, so I don’t know when I can finish, but I think it will be cool.

Jose!!!- OMG I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS AND I DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!!! IM CRYING SO HARD...NOOOO. I met Jose at colleague training, I spent some time learning about the video unit with him. He always had a smile on his face and seemed so happy. I have missed him since I left after the 2 week training and always looked forward to seeing him again. I will always remember his smile and how friendly and welcoming he was.

There aren’t enough kind words to describe you. I will always be grateful for you going out of your way to connect with me. You allowed me to feel welcomed in a space I never felt I belonged. Jose, Christmas Eve at the Bellow’s family table will never be the same...For me, the Christmas holidays were heavy with sorrow and loneliness. Sitting beside you at their table year after year brought me comfort, even laughter. You always made me feel welcomed, valued, heard, and loved.

Este mensaje va para los que lo leen. Porque no se si a José le llegaran estas palabras, aunque si mi llanto.
José era único, todo lo que tocaba lo convertía en algo hermoso. Y sobre todo a las personas. Tuve el placer de convivir con José. Lo veía desde que me levantaba hasta que me iba a dormir. Y en él nunca vi una sola pizca de maldad u oscuridad.

We were just babies. I concocted this secret plan to introduce to my boss and the community I had fallen in love with because I knew it need you and you needed it. I paraded you around the Clubhouse and you fanned my passionate flame for my newfound love and made me feel so confident in my 6 months as a Clubhouse staff person (something you never stopped doing even when I was tired and lost sight of my value). I remember fighting for you to be hired at Gateway and you naturally did the rest because it was made for you and you were made for it. I saw you for what you couldn’t yet see in yourself. 

You reminded me that I was meant for greatness every chance you could and more. You believed I had a voice and a talent to lead way before I felt ready or knew what you meant. You saw me for what I couldn’t yet see in myself. 

You guided my thoughts and actions even today as I tearfully pulled through a BUSY Starbucks drive-thru with Morgan in the middle of our crying fest. I, without hesitation, held back my tears, looked the woman at the window and asked genuinely how she and her team were doing today. We exchanged a bit of small talk and as I pulled away, I looked at Morgan and said, “That was José.”

I’m moving bravely, my friend, with you joining my mom on my life and soul advisory council. Thank you for seeing the woman I am now and -
also seeing the woman I am capable of being... even when I was too afraid to be her yet. I won’t waste another breath. I am brave. I am loved. I am worthy. I am light. I am living. I will carry your legacy of seeking humanity in everyday moments.

I remember meeting José for a 2 week colleague training at Gateway House Clubhouse in August 2018. My first interaction and impression of José was WOW he has a great deal of energy lol. He reminds me of myself greeting everyone with a smile the first thing in morning because he didn’t want anyone to be left out and if he did forget someone he makes sure he or she is greeted. That’s one of things admire of José; he treated everyone with dignity and respect and making everyone feel comfortable and welcome. José is definitely a true example of the Clubhouse model!!! He will definitely be missed but never forgotten. Gateway House Clubhouse I’ll definitely keep y’all in my thoughts and prayers.

You were always there when I needed you and I was always there for you. We are for sure "brothers from another mother".  I know in my heart that you are in heaven. Such a kind heart and always spoke well of others. There were many nights working with him where he was the only one that was genuinely encouraging and in a cheery mood. He was a hard worker and never complained about his tasks.I always enjoyed working with Jose and was inspired by his gravity to help others that were in need. It's devastating to know he won't be with us anymore but I think he's at peace now and will be remembered by me as a positive, kind and helpful person.

No lo conocí bien, no charlamos mucho... Pero se notaba que era un joven muy pero muy alegre, siempre risueño, la última vez que lo vi me regaló unas cosas, las atesoraré para siempre, muchas gracias, nunca te olvidaremos... Descansa en paz joven Lalo... 

I am a board member of Gateway House.  I did not know Jose very well, but from the interactions we had with each other he was  fine young man and he will be missed by all.  So, so very sorry for your loss.

    Thank you for being such a great coworker, friend, “brother”, and human being. I am so grateful to have known you and I am a better person because of it. You gave so freely and your humility was unmatched. You were there for so many others and made an impact anywhere you went. Your love and kindness was contagious and so encouraging. 
     You were there for me during the toughest and darkest times of my life. You were gracious and put me first. I (we) never deserved you. You were mi Hermano, mi familia, and Gateway’s very own “Rico Suave.” We all love you so much.  
      I am gonna miss talking Star Wars, cooking (eating) with you, drinking French press coffee, you sneaking up on me, your passion, our talks about what our dreams are and what the future might be like, seeing your new photos, and more. Jose was a force of nature no matter what he was doing.  Photographer, videographer, encourager, teacher... and fierce friend to all who came into his life.  I am a better person today for having known him.  Jose, we will always remember you.

I as staff of Alliance House Clubhouse located in Salt Lake City Utah, had the opportunity to participate in Clubhouse Training at Gateway Clubhouse a few years ago. I met Jose then and was greatly impressed with him. He was a caring individual and motivated to aid those around him. He lifted others spirits in a positive way. You will be greatly missed Jose.

A few months ago Jose took me and a couple of our friends to Tandem in downtown Travelers Rest to celebrate my birthday. He bought me a crepe and we all ate together out on the patio area. Then we went wandering around downtown looking in various shops and galleries. It was one of the best days in my recent memory, and one of the many good times we had that I will cherish always. Jose was a very kind, caring individual full of enthusiasm and passion for his social work and his photography. He was one of my favorite people in the world.

I will so miss Jose’s ever present smile and good nature he gave  so freely.   Jose shared his gift of photography with us at the cancer survivors park alliance and his special images captured for our survivor series stories will forever be his legacy.  Peace to you and your family my friend.  - k

Thank you Jose for the friendship, the love, the thoughtfulness and kindness you always shared. Harper and I would not have been and will never be the same because of the beautiful love and life you shared with us. I am beyond heartbroken to never be able to laugh with you, learn from you or hug you again here on this earth but I do know...as you Promised me...we will meet again.

Jose was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and he was a gifted photographer.  Jose donated his photography services to law enforcement appreciation dinners that I organize in Spartanburg and Cherokee counties. He did a great job photographing everyone involved. I always enjoyed the opportunity to share his work.

How can this be? You were always too generous with your love, and gave it all away. Every moment you could, you did so. You were so serious about being silly. We are all doubtlessly better people for having known you and having been seen by your bright, kind eyes. I'm grateful for your soul. It will live on in all the people and beauty you found in this world. I will see your soul in every photograph you took, in every life you touched, and in every face you ever met because we all loved you, we love you now and always will.

Jose, I am thankful for having met an amazing person like you. Your friendship and kindness made you lovable. Your smile was contagious and unforgettable. I was so blessed to have known Jośe. For 5 years, I received nothing but kindness, love, laughter, and support. You always did everything to make others smile. This picture captures just a glimpse of your vibrant personality. I know how much you loved Star Wars. So much so, that when my husband and I got married on May 4th, 2018, you loved that it was Star Wars day. You were more than just a staff member. You were a friend. You were family. Doing the daily video with you was one of the best parts of my days. I have dozens of our daily videos on DVD at home, and I know that I’ll be watching them all over again. I’ll always be so lucky to have known you, and worked closely with you. I love you endlessly. And I know you loved me, and many others, endlessly. Rest In Peace Jośe. May the Force Be With You. 

Jose's kindness is legendary, and is one of the reasons he was such a great photographer.  He viewed everyone as valuable and treated everyone with respect and dignity, and his pictures of people reflected that sweetness. He was always quick to downplay his own skill and to build others up, and to support those around him.  I only wish I could have supported him the way he supported others.

A true giver of light and love. The world is a better and more thoughtful place because of your compassion. Our hearts hurt to see such a selflessly kind person absent from this earth.  May you find peace and happiness weasel. 

I met Jose about 4 years ago and we quickly became friends. I would often see him downtown, out taking pictures while I was out playing music. We talked quite a bit, and he even took my picture on several occasions. He always brought a smile to my face and lifted my spirits with his positivity and kindness. If I ever saw him from a distance, I'd stop what I was doing and make a beeline to him, because he was just an amazing human being. He'll be missed for sure. I'll never forget him for as long as I live.

You will truly be missed. I will hold on to all of the memories I have from us laughing and working together. I am blessed to have met you my friend. 

Our precious Jose. You are loved beyond measure. You were born with every skill needed to be a Clubhouse person. You gave all of your wonderful self to others. Your loving, energetic, kind and caring spirit will stay with us for all our lives.
