Lindsey grew up in Rose Valley, PA. She graduated from Nether Providence High School and received an associate’s degree from Averett College and a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina in Spartanburg. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Lindsey resided on the east side of Greenville for most of her adult life, although she and her family also lived in Oakville, Ontario, Carmel, IN, and Huntington, NY during the 1990s. In 2000 she returned to Greenville, the place she and her family had always considered “home.” Lindsey was involved in the community and volunteered her time where she was needed. She spent many years delivering meals for Meals on Wheels. She was also a member of Taylor’s First Baptist Church, the Laurens Road Garden Club, and the Greenville Republican Women’s Club. Lindsey enjoyed spending time with family and friends, meeting with her Bible Study group, playing bridge, and traveling. She was a friend to everyone she met. Lindsey had a kind and engaging spirit, and always had a smile and encouraging word to share with others. She was a gift from the Lord, and will be greatly missed.
Lindsey was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, James Howard “Jim” Bernhardt, who died in 2015. Lindsey spent the last five years of Jim’s life providing selfless love and care for Jim during his battle with ALS. Lindsey was also predeceased by her mother and father, Jean Lore Lindsey and John Guy Britton, Jr. She is survived by her brothers Guy Britton of Haddonfield, NJ and Andrew Britton of Thornton, PA, her children Amy and Josh Henderson of Spartanburg, SC and A.J. and Erin Bernhardt of St. Louis, MO, as well as her four beautiful grandchildren, to whom she was known as “Nana” - Lindsey Beth Henderson, Matthew Henderson, Anna Bernhardt, and Morgan Bernhardt. She is also survived by her beloved grandpups, Hope, Molly, Gracie, Crosby, and Brodie. Brodie visited Lindsey often at White Oak Estates during her final days.
Lindsey’s children are especially grateful for all the support they have received from Lindsey’s friends and their extended family over the past four months and for the excellent care Lindsey received from all of the staff at White Oak Estates.
The family will have a private graveside service, where she will be laid to rest at Taylors First Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meals on Wheels of Greenville, the Greenville Humane Society, or a charity of choice.
