Martin was born a twin on December 6, 1931 in Butler, Alabama to Gertie Maude Morgan and Martin Van Buren Chandler.
Martin graduated from Choctaw County High school where he also played football and was voted “best all around” by his peers for Senior Superlatives. After graduating high school, Martin enlisted in the US Air Force, where he selflessly served his Country in the Korean War. After serving in the military, he went to work for John D. Hollingsworth for 20 years, and retired from Michelin Tires after 15 plus years.
Martin was married 67 years to the love of his life Shirley Long Chandler. He enjoyed being at their lakeplace, watching football, spending time with his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He especially loved his little Frenchie pup Paris. Martin was well loved and known for his witty sense of humor and colorful jokes. His favorite saying was always “The best things in life are free”.
Martin is survived by his wife, Shirley Long Chandler; his sons Larry Chandler (Debbie) and Scott Chandler (Lindsay); his daughters Star Chandler (April) and Tammy Chandler (Byran); his sisters Jean Shannon and Peggy Sue Ferry; his best friend of 72 years Earl Jack Childers. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren to cherish his memory.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents; his loving stepfather Otis Clarence Morgan; his sister Voncille Chandler; his twin brother Mason L. Chandler; his sister Sylvia Rutledge; and his longtime best friend, Charlie Ehrenfeld.
A visitation for Martin will be held Sunday, October 1, 2023 from 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609. A funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm officiated by Reverend Josh Callahan and Kyle Rutledge. A committal service with military honors will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
