Marvin Monroe Ward

Marvin left Arkansas at the age of 16 to move to Cleveland, Ohio. He received a BA in African Studies and History from Cleveland State University and a Masters in Student Development from Case Western Reserve, before teaching several years at Texas Southern University in Houston. He subsequently spent over 40 years working in Human Resources within corporate America, culminating in a role as Vice President of Human Resources for Rockwell Automation in Greenville, South Carolina. After retiring from Rockwell, Marvin taught Human Resources at Clemson University and opened a consulting business (Talent Management, Inc.) with his wife and partner, Beverly Ward.

Marvin invested heavily in Greenville, serving on the Board for the United Way and the Meyers Center. A Riley Institute Diversity Fellow, he also helped to spearhead the creation of the African American Leadership Society, serving as Chairman early in the organization’s history. Moreover, Marvin was an active member of the Holly Tree Country Club, serving on multiple committees during his tenure as a Member of the Board of Governors. Marvin’s love of golf also led him to be a co-founder of the Brothers on Par golf group.

Marvin’s talent, humor, and commitment to the community will be cherished by his family, friends, and colleagues. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Beverly, their two sons, Marvin Jr. and Jonathan, his sister, Lynda Baker, his cousin, Reggie Evans, and a host of relatives and friends.

A visitation with his family will be held on Friday, January 10th from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park (1 Pine Knoll Dr, Greenville, SC 29609), followed by a service celebrating his life and accomplishments at 11:00 AM in the same location.
