Mary Stuart Hatch Taylor, daughter of James M. Hatch and Lillian H. Hatch died on Tuesday March 17, 2015 at the age of 89.
She was born in Charlotte, NC on December 23, 1925 and attended public schools there.
She received her BA degree in English from Agnes Scott College and her Masters of Arts from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond Virginia. After working as a director of Christian Education in Atlanta churches, she married John Stuart Taylor, Jr. of Greenville in 1952. She and her husband were charter members of John Knox Presbyterian Church where she was elected the first female elder and served as the first female Moderator of the Presbytery. She served for many years on the Presbytery's Committee on Preparation for Ministry, which provided guidance to countless seminary students, including her two sons. Mary Stuart served as the director and teacher of the John Knox weekday kindergarten and taught for 25 years at Greenville Tech in Developmental Studies. She thoroughly enjoyed living the last eight years at Foothills Retirement Community of Easley.
Mary Stuart is survived by her children and their families: son Rev. J. Stuart Taylor III and his children, Lilly and Rachel and their mother, Lisa; son Rev. Dr. David R. Taylor, his wife Rev. Tandy G. Taylor, and their children Sam and Emily; and daughter Elizabeth H. Taylor.
A memorial service is planned for 11:00 AM Saturday, March 28, 2015 at John Knox Presbyterian Church with the Reverends Julie Schaaf and David Howell officiating.
