A proud veteran, Mike served in the military and later worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. Later in his career, he traveled across the country for nuclear power plant outages, a time during which he pursued his passions—flying planes, gliders, and soar planes, and honing his craft in wood carving.
In retirement, Mike’s love for life continued through music. He especially enjoyed playing percussion instruments, attending music festivals, and watching Fox News at full volume—always at volume 100. As his eyesight declined, his daughters and son-in-law lovingly converted his equipment barn into “Mike’s Music Barn,” a space where he hosted jam sessions with friends and made lasting memories.
Mike was a devoted father and grandfather, cherishing time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his four children: Fonda, Michelle (Eric), Renee, and Mitchell, predeceased by his first son, “Mikey”, seven grandchildren: Justin(Dana), Byron(Angelina), Kayla(Casey), John-Michael(Becky), Kevin, Christopher(Courtney), and Brian; and six great-grandchildren: JJ, Owen, Byron III, Leilani, Adeline, and Josephine.
A celebration of life will be held on May 31 at 2:00 PM at 4334 State Park Road, Greenville, SC, with a gathering to follow at Mike’s Music Barn, located on the property. Friends and loved ones are encouraged to share a few words and memories during the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike’s honor to the Greenville Humane Society or Veterans Last Patrol, causes close to Mike’s heart.
