

Renato was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was born August 9, 1934, in Pisa, Italy, and was a son of the late Pietro Moncini of Montecatini Alto, Italy and the late Gina Petri Moncini of Pisa Italy. He is the oldest of three siblings, and remained very close with his brothers Silvio and Giorgio.
Renato was a graduate of the Leonardo da Vinci Art Institute where he studied art and architecture. He served as a Sargent in the Italian Air Force. In 1958, Renato visited Huntsville, AL as part of a military exchange program between the U.S. and Italy. While there, he met his wife, Faye. Later, Renato worked for NASA as the technical illustrator for the Apollo space program. He was known as the “First Artist of Space” and his works can be found in the Smithsonian Institute of Art in Washington DC. In 1974, Renato went to work for Flour Daniel and retired after 20 years. After retirement, he continued to use his talents to help friends, family and the community of Greenville, SC. He remained a prolific painter and illustrator throughout his life. His works can be seen in places throughout the upstate of South Carolina.
In addition to his wife, Renato is survived by his son, Tony Moncini and his wife Kelly of Greenville, SC; his daughter, Angela Moncini Slay and her husband Grant of Marble Falls, TX; his grandchildren, Alec Moncini, Carli Moncini, Conor Slay and Lucas Slay.
Services for Renato will be held at Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church of Greenville, 207 Mitchell Rd, Greenville, SC 29615 on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM followed by a memorial service at 11:30 AM with Rev. Andy Lewis and Rev. Curtis Dubose officiating.
A private burial will take place at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
