Bob was a graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a student on an ROTC scholarship there, he served in the Air Force Reserves for two years after graduation. He was an executive with Daniel Construction/Fluor Daniel for many years. He later served as President of H2L Consulting Engineers. He was an alumnus of The Executive Program at University of Virginia, Dardin School of Business. Bob received numerous awards during his career for his involvement in making Greenville, SC a better community. He was on the founding board of Leadership Greenville. He served as the Owner’s Representative for the City of Greenville on both the Peace Center for the Performing Arts and The Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. In 1982, he traveled with the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Samuel Pierce, for 6 weeks to China to help them improve their building and housing programs.
Bob was a man of deep faith and his faith was evident on a daily basis in his life. He has been a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1995 where he served as an Elder and Sunday School teacher for many years. His dedication to his Lord has been and will continue to be a strong influence on all who knew him, especially his family.
Bob was also an avid runner and tennis player as long as his health permitted and enjoyed golf and “puttering around” in his yard, garage or anywhere someone needed help with a project. When his fifth-grade grandson, Carter Schaaf, volunteered his “Papa” to build a butterfly garden at Oakview Elementary as a gift from the first fifth grade class to graduate from that school in the year 2000, he stepped up to the plate and considered the garden as important as any job he had ever overseen in all of his career. The butterfly garden still remains at Oakview.
Bob is survived by his wife Becky, the former Rebecca Gearheart, the love of his life for over 67 years. In addition, he is survived by his daughter, Julie Schaaf (Danny), and his son Mike Carter (Debbie); four grandchildren, Katie Kelley, Carter Schaaf (Catie), Mary Margaret Robertson (Cody) and Matthew Carter (Kellee); and 6 great grandchildren, Hayden Jackson, Douglas Kelley, Millie Cate Carter, Charlotte Carter, Daniel Schaaf and Ellie Robertson; two sisters, Jean Raborn and Margaret Rossa and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Mary McRae and Susan McFadden.
