Alan Ross Capell, age 67, passed away on October 13, 2021, in Greenville, South Carolina. He was born on June 2, 1954, to Ernie and Alice Capell in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ross grew up in Greenville, where he graduated from Wade Hampton High School in 1972.
Over the next several years, Ross attended The Citadel as well as Greenville Tech, eventually leaving college to work for his father’s company, E.C. Capell and Associates. Like his father, Ross was mechanically inclined and enjoyed working in the textile industry alongside his father. In his spare time, Ross enjoyed tinkering with his MGB, which seemed to need constant attention. Another passion he shared with his father was flying fixed-wing aircraft, and Ross was employed at the Greenville Downtown Airport for a few years where he eventually earned his private pilot’s license. In later years, he found his true calling working as a tour bus driver for several firms, chauffeuring college athletes to and from their games for a number of colleges including Furman University, Presbyterian College, and Clemson University, to name a few. Additionally, he loved taking school children on tours of Washington, D.C., or to visit the barrier islands off South Carolina. He will be remembered for his quick wit and dry sense of humor which he used to entertain numerous students and athletes as well as his friends and family over the years.
Ross is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Carey and Becky Capell, of Sumter; his nephews Eric Capell of Sumter, and Colin (Sarah) Capell of Prosperity; his niece, Lauren Capell, of Sumter; and his sister, Cydney Capell, of Dallas, Texas. He was predeceased in death by his partner of 23 years, Joan McMahan.
Ross was cremated and will be honored by a memorial service at a future date.
