Sheely was a wonderful wife, mother, friend, and teacher. She was on my list of heroes. She suffered many tragedies during her life, but she had an abiding faith that sustained her. I marveled at her strength. She never became bitter-but always lived her life with enthusiasm. My children loved being with her and going to Lake Hosea. I taught with Sheely for many years at League. I have so many happy memories of our field trips, book discussions, and faculty parties at her home. I loved and admired her. I will miss her. Hers was truly a life well- lived.

Sheely was a beloved colleague at League and an outstanding teacher to two of my children. I have kept and treasure notes from her from our years together. She was always wise and honest and deeply caring. Please accept my sincerest condolences and remembrances of her goodness and numerous contributions to her school, church, and community,

Sheely Schenk Miller was my super aunt. She was wise. She was stronger than any human I have ever known, or will ever meet. She was as loving as she was strong.

Sheely was “the last sibling standing” in her large, loving and sometimes boisterous Little family, because she completely embodied that fierce maternal drive to “care for those who need you”—above all else. This began, in large measure, the day Sheely’s own mother left this life suddenly. And so, the daughter became mother—as much as sister—to three younger brothers. As one of my Little cousins just told me, “they are now, finally, all together tonight, all of them. There must be one heck of a party going on.” With silly jokes and smiles. Always smiles.

But as this last sentence, of a final chapter, of a generation of Little family siblings does comes to an almost unbelievable close, we in the Little family will “keep on” just as Sheely did, holding her in our hearts just as surely as she has always kept us in hers.

Dell and Terry send love and prayers to all of Aunt Sheely’s beloved family and friends—so cruelly kept apart not only by distance but a changed world that each of us is experiencing right now. We are anxious to celebrate the life of a truly amazing woman—such an admirable teacher, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend—and we long for the opportunity to gather and see each other again, very, very soon. ❤️
