I would be remiss not to pay tribute to this servant of God, whose passing from earth I just learned of today. His instantaneous quotation of a single text of Scripture in response to the burden of my heart was the instance of my regeneration more than 40 years ago.  By that experience I learned what it means to be born again by the incorruptible seed of God's Word, and that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Principles of biblical exposition that I learned later in his classes have guided my labors since. God's faithfulness to me was exhibited through the life of Steward Custer. My condolences are offered to his family.

Dr. Custer was such a wonderful person, who taught me a whole lot through his classes, through working with him at the planetarium, as well as through the way he interacted with students around campus. I imagine my first encounter with him in heaven will be similar to my freshman year at Bob Jones University, when a passing individual with a beaming smile looks me in the eye and says with a booming voice, "Hello, there!"

I will always be grateful for the insight and well thought out guidance Dr. Custer gave me and my family at a difficult time.  I was able to help his congregation with a building issue and got to see Dr. Custer give strong leadership.  Good man will certainly be missed (down here).

Pastor Custer will be missed by many; including me. i feel blessed to have been able to hear him preach the word. I will never forget the hike that he took us on at the Wilds;nor forget his love of nature. such a sweet soul.

We are so very thankful to have been under Pastor Custer's shepherding leadership for 20 years.  Each week a joy to anticipate his sermon from the Word of God.  His humility, clarity, gentle spirit and compassion for others will always be a tremendous example.  He treated everyone with kindness and respect, no matter who they were.  A quiet but deep sense of humor, a deep appreciation for beautiful music, a life well lived --Pastor Custer shared his life and service with so many of us, and for that we are most grateful.  Our prayers for Steve in this great loss, but we celebrate, too, his 'graduation' to be with his Redeemer, Friend and King.

It was quite apparent that Dr. Custer lived what he preached and taught. I am thankful for the many classes I had from him, almost all my New Testament training in grad school. I will always remember his warm spirit, encyclopedic mind, and dedication to the Word of God. May the grace of God be magnified to his family.

I pray for God's comfort for the family.  I remember Dr. Custer as a favorite grad school professor at BJU during my Masters and Doctoral studies.  He was a godly man with a gracious spirit and a brilliant Bible scholar.  I am very grateful for the training I received in his classes.

My husband and I had the privilege of serving along side Dr. Custer for many years. We also traveled with him on one of his trips to Israel and Egypt. He was a humble servant of our Lord and influenced many in loving and understanding the Word of God.....Lucille Fisher

Loved Dr. Custer! My husband visited him earlier in the year at Shepherd's Gate. Said he was as sweet and humble as ever!

Dr Custer was a gentle, humble servant of Christ whom we always admired and respected.  We had him for Acts of the Apostles--what a learning experience.  I also have read through twice in his Devotional book.  He will be greatly missed, but heaven is blessed.

I knew Dr. Custer from Shepherds Care Assisted Living. I enjoyed talking to him about his tours in the Holy Land. I bought one of his books and he signed it for me. Always so pleasant and such a gentleman. Prayers for his family! 

As long as there is a Bob Jones University, there will be memories of Dr. Custer. He was a blessing to all who knew him. We will miss him very much.

Thousands have been influenced by Dr. Custer's kind, gentle, humble, and Christ-like testimony.  He is "absent from the body...present with the Lord," and the impact of his life will live on. 

May the family know God's grace, mercy, and peace at this time of loss.

Dr. Custer's love for the scriptures and for the Lord Jesus Christ had a huge impact on my life for which I am so thankful. I look forward to our family reunion!

Dr. Custer was my faculty advisor and always an inspiration. His love of learning was only exceeded by his humility and love for the Lord Jesus Christ. May God comfort his dear family and friends with his living testimony in the lives of many of us who have carried his love for the Word throughout the World.

Dr. Custer was such a blessing and encouragement to students and graduates of BJU.  He was a man of unusual gifts and breadth of knowledge.  He is now with  his beloved Savior !

Dr Custer's legacy lives on through his students.  How often I have used the skills and knowledge this brilliant man taught me in various graduate courses!  He inspired me to pursue a Ph.D. as well, although I will never attain the depth of knowledge he possessed, and I treasure the fact his signature rests on one of the front pages of my dissertation as one of my committee members.  I recall asking many questions in class and taking copious notes but also remember a few times his quirky sense of humor had us almost falling out of our seats with laughter while he smiled and vocalized his well-known "heh, heh" muffled chuckles.  I smile as I write this, for Dr Custer's departure is truly our loss but heaven's gain.  May God grant us grace to follow his example.  We will miss him.

Thank you Lord for giving so many preacher boys the privilege of sitting under Dr. Custer's ministry. Thanks to Dr. Custer, we learned to be expositors of the Word of God.  But we learn so much more by his godly example and humble spirit. I have often thanked the Lord for allowing me to know him personally. What a joy it was to go back to BJU and have an opportunity to spend a few minutes with him, once even having lunch together and talking about his writing a commentary on Acts.

What a blessing to have know this special man.  He was a godly, humble, prayerful, and Bible-oriented saint.  His testimony has impacted many lives for the Lord.  And now he stands in the presence of his God!
