

She was born on February 10, 1927, to Oscar and Jessie (Black) Cornwell on a farm south of Mt. Vernon, SD, where she grew up. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in May 1945 and from Mitchell Business College in Mitchell, SD, in 1946. She was employed with the Commercial Trust and Savings Bank in Mitchell until her marriage to John Arland Berg on February 28, 1951. They made their home in the area and later in Sioux Falls, SD, where they were State Directors of Child Evangelism Fellowship from 1961 to 1968. In 1973 they moved to Anaheim, CA, where they were both on the staff of Anaheim Baptist Church and were Area Directors of Child Evangelism Fellowship. In August 1978 they moved to Greenville, SC, to be near family and were both employed at Bob Jones University. Violet retired as Facilities Dispatcher in May 1997. Her husband passed away February 24, 1998.
Violet was a member of Hampton Park Baptist Church and participated in various ministries there.
She is survived by her three sons: James A. (Pat) of Taylors, SC; Dennis W. of Palm Springs, CA; and Thomas D. (Elizabeth) of Greenville, SC. She also leaves behind six granddaughters and sixteen great grandchildren: Jim’s daughters: Kirsten (Darrell) Daulton of Greenville, SC, and their children, Bobby, William, Darrell J, and Kaija; Angela (Jeremy) McMorris, of Amarillo, TX, and their children, Jay, Christiana, Evangeline, and Abraham; Michelle (Paul) Radford of Taylors, SC, and their children, Matilda, Atticus, and Oscar; Tom’s daughters: Mary (William) Schleifer of Omaha, NE, and their daughters, Miranda Violet and Rosemary; Rachel (Jacob) Hrinko of Travelers Rest, SC, and their sons Orion and Xander; and Laura (Levi) Black of Greer, SC, and their daughter, Liliana. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Kathy Cornwell of Easley, SC, plus nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Jessie Cornwell, her in-laws John and Alida Berg, her sisters Jane Cornwell, Florence Black, and Pearl Mathis, and her brother, Delbert Cornwell.
A memorial service will be held at Hampton Park Baptist Church, Greenville, SC, on Friday, September 26 at 3:00 PM. Visitation will begin at 1:30 PM. A graveside memorial and burial will take place later at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, SD.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hampton Park Baptist Church missions or the Wilds Christian Association.
