Danny Yarborough was both a Legend and a Saint, and if you were lucky enough to have ever met him, you understand what we mean. While he had many professional accomplishments, his legacy is seen in the life that he built and the relationships that he created. Dan was open minded and non judgmental. He was kind, curious, and funny. He loved conversation and listening to peoples’ stories- that’s what made him a successful lawyer and such a loving husband, brother, father and friend. He believed in people and honored their truth, which is such a gift in the world we live in.
Dan was always supportive of every member of his family, including his three sisters and many nieces and nephews. He and Millie, his wife of 53 years, were seen as a “golden couple” who were genuinely devoted to each other. And they were. They renewed their vows on a trip to Israel in 2008 and then again 3 years ago for their 50th anniversary on a family trip to Florida. For the past eleven years, Millie stood by Dan’s side, caring for him through his multiple myeloma cancer treatments and even after being in remission for the last six years, they were inseparable as he struggled with more health issues. Throughout all of this, he never complained. His nurses and doctors adored him and many even became lifelong friends with Millie and him.
Dan was a loving father who cherished his children and did anything for each of them. They will miss hearing him exuberantly say, “Hey Acey”, “Hey Meems”, “Big D” and “Car-E–O”, nicknames he and Millie lovingly gave each of their children. He also had a passion for gardening and cooking, and he especially loved making key lime pies and fresh peach cobbler, and he loved tiramsu. Although Dan and Millie had travelled internationally, their happiest vacations were at Lake Lure and Fripp Island. Even in his final days, Dan told his daughters he wished for one last vacation at Fripp Island.
Dan’s eight grandkids will miss talking to their “Gadaddy” about life, history, and politics. He truly was a world of knowledge.
William Daniel Yarborough, Jr. passed away with his entire family surrounding him on November 28, 2021 at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, SC.
Dan was born in Norfolk, VA on July 7, 1945 to William Daniel Yarborough, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Treadwell Yarborough. He was an attorney who specialized in the practice of family law in Greenville. He had served as Master in Equity for Greenville County for several years before he returned to his private practice. He was also very active in Democratic Party politics for many years supporting former Governor Dick Riley and Senator Fritz Hollings in their election campaigns. In 1976, he was a Democratic candidate for the S.C. State Senate seat in his district. In addition to politics and law, he was also interested in real estate and helped develop Augusta Commons on Augusta Rd in Greenville, SC.
Dan is survived by his adoring wife, Millie, and their four children Amy Kawar (Nader) of Asheville, Mimi Webb (Yan deGialluly) of Simpsonville, Daniel Yarborough, III of Greenville, and Caroline Fowler (Graham) of Taylors. He admired and loved his eight grandchildren, whom he was so proud of, Becca, Mia, Zyah, Amara, Piper, Willie, Nate and Gordon.
Dan’s surviving siblings are Jean Y Helms, of Charleston, Jane Creech of Greenville, Elizabeth (Libby) Yarborough of Greenville.
A private service for Dan will be held on Sunday, December 5th in Asheville, NC at the home of his daughter, Amy. There will be a Celebration of Life for all friends and acquaintances of Dan’s to gather in the new year.
There is nothing like the gut wrenching pain of losing your father and love of your life. We will cherish every moment and memory and are eternally grateful to have spent the last few days of Dan’s life with family and best friends at his bedside. Together, we laughed, cried, held hands, told stories, reminisced and got to express our profound love for our dad.
Dan’s family wishes that you live your life like “Dan the Man”. Be kind, generous, openhearted, compassionate, and love like there is no tomorrow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials or donations in Dan’s name may be made to the Bon Secours Cancer Center of Greenville.
