John T Flannery

John T. Flannery – a resident of Cheshire Connecticut (formally of Greenwich) passed away Tuesday February 1, 2011. He entered his heavenly home while surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 87 years young. John was born in Greenwich – the son of the late Elizabeth (Keating) and John P. Flannery. He was a graduate of Greenwich High School – class of 1941. He joined the U.S. Navy in December 1941 – serving four years during World War II. On his return to Greenwich he joined the Greenwich Police Department where he served until 1975. He began his career as a patrol officer and finished as Captain of the Traffic Division. After completing his Associates Degree at Norwalk Community College, he entered private security working for the State University of New York and Gleason Plant Security. He finished his working career at Pitney Bowes in Stamford, where he worked for 10 years. In his retirement years he enjoyed traveling, winters in Florida and a game of horse shoes. John was predeceased by his wife of 52 years – Mary (Mohyde) Flannery. He is survived by his son John Flannery and his wife Virginia of Burlington, Connecticut; daughter Ann Murphy and her husband Robert of Pleasantville New York; sisters May McAndrews and Eileen Gove, and brother William Flannery – all of Greenwich. John’s family will welcome friends at the Leo Gallagher Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street, Greenwich, CT on Friday February 4 between the hours of 3 and 7 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on at 10:00 a.m. Saturday February 5 at Saint Mary’s Church, 178 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich, CT. In lieu of flowers, John requests donations are made to the American Cancer Society.
