Joe was born in Greenwich, where he spent the majority of his life. Upon retirement, he primarily lived in Ocala, FL before moving to Selleck Woods in Darien, CT to be closer to family.
He was one of six children growing up in the Le Grande Avenue neighborhood of Greenwich. Joe graduated from Greenwich High School and continued his education at Wright Technical School. He proudly served as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War.
Encouraged by his father to learn a trade, Joe started his plumbing career at Putnam Plumbing before opening his own business, Bologna Plumbing and Heating, which he owned for over 25 years.
Joe met the love his life, Katherine Fountain (“Kat” as he affectionately called her), at the Yankee Doodle in Riverside. Married on July 7, 1962, they settled in Old Greenwich, where they raised their son, Peter.
Joe loved to keep busy, whether it was operating his plumbing business, fixing things around the house (he always had the best lawn in the neighborhood), going on cruise vacations with family and friends, or spending long summer days at Todd’s Point and Island Beach. When he was not on the beach, he could be found on his boat, the “Bejewla.”
Upon retiring in 2002, Joe and Kathy moved to On Top of the World in Ocala, Florida. They were one of the original Looper’s (as their neighborhood in Florida was known). There he developed a passion for golf. As with most golfers, Joe had his regular buddies to play with multiple times a week. His devotion earned him a hole-in-one within his first year playing. Soon thereafter he won his club championship and continued to shoot scores below his age well into his 80s.
But above all else, Joe loved his family. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Kathy, his son Peter (Jenifer), and his grandchildren Andrew (Erin), Alexander, and Matthew. He also is survived by his sisters Rose Mazon and Edith Montpelier, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Pietro and Maria Bologna, his brothers Frank and Michael Bologna, and his sister Emma Pistininzi.
To honor Joe’s life, a Mass at St. Timothy’s Chapel, Greenwich, CT will be held on Thursday, March 6 at 4 p.m..
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stamford Hospital Foundation.
