Born November 14, 1934, he was the son of Grace Lau and Winfield W. Greene. He grew up in Westport, Connecticut and graduated from The Putney School in 1952 and Yale University in 1956. He was a member of the Casualty Actuarial Society, the American Academy of Actuaries, and AIDA Reinsurance and Insurance Arbitration Society.
Mr. Greene spent his career in the reinsurance industry with American Re-Insurance Company, General Reinsurance Corporation and Thomas A. Greene & Company, a reinsurance brokerage firm. After his retirement in 1992, he was active as an arbitrator and umpire in reinsurance arbitrations.
In both his professional and personal lives he will be remembered for his generous spirit and big heart. He was a wonderful mentor and advisor to his many colleagues over the years, and always made time to listen and offer his counsel and encouragement. He was a terrible golfer but respectable tennis player, loved chess, crossword puzzles and steak dinners. He loved nothing more than celebrating the milestones, humble and grand, of his many family members, which he would do by hosting a lavish meal and lingering evening. The kindness, care and love he showed toward others throughout his life came back to him a hundredfold during the illness of his final months, and he was touched by the expression of those sentiments.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy F. Greene, of Greenwich, whom he married in 1972; his sister, Barbara Saskor of Pinehurst, North Carolina; his children, Elizabeth Nowakowski of Mequon, Wisconsin, Thomas Greene, Jr. of Fairfield, and Virginia Williams of Carpinteria, California; and eight grandchildren, Sarah Chamberlain and Samuel Nowakowski, Meredith, Emily and Julia Greene and Benjamin, Grace and Carson Williams. In addition, four stepchildren survive him: Abigail Kamen, Hillary McAtee and Peter Spizzirri, all of Greenwich and Anthony Spizzirri of Norwalk and their children: Alex and Liza Kamen, Haley, Jackson and Melody McAtee, Nicholas, Eliot and Alexandra Spizzirri and Lucas Spizzirri. His half-brother, Winfield Kurt Greene and his beloved granddaughter, Tessa Nowakowski, predeceased him.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 5th at the Stanwich Congregational Church, 202 Taconic Road, Greenwich, CT. Interment will be private.
