

FLANNERY, William James (Bill), died peacefully at age 91 on February 27th after a brief illness. A lifelong Greenwich resident, Bill was born on October 23, 1925 to Irish immigrants, John and Elizabeth Flannery. Bill graduated from Greenwich High School in 1944 where he enjoyed varsity track and basketball. After graduation, he served in the US Army during the late stages of World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in Wurzburg Germany, April 1945.
Bill returned home in 1946 and married Byram girl ,Georgeanna Dehnel on July 2, 1949. Bill retired as a letter carrier from Greenwich Post Office after 38 years of employment. He finished his career working another 10 years at the Putnam Trust Bank.
A friend to many, Bill’s greatest love was always for family. Bill was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 53 years, sisters May McAndrews and Eileen Gove, and brother John Flannery. Bill is survived by his 2 children; Skip (Pamela) Flannery of Collierville Tennessee and Lynn (Joe) Fox of Hamden Connecticut. He also leaves behind 4 grandchildren, Bill, Casey, Erin, and Colin as well as 9 loving nephews and 4 adoring nieces.
Family and Friends are invited to pay their respects at Leo P. Gallagher’s Funeral Home, 31 Arch St in Greenwich, CT on Thursday March 2nd from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St Catherine’s Church, 4 Riverside Ave., Riverside, CT at 10am March 3rd, with interment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greenwich.
