Delleen Marie Kompkoff, 72, of Gresham, Oregon, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025. She was born September 23, 1952, in Moscow, Idaho, to Delmar and Kathleen Moffitt. Her early years were spent in Spokane, Washington. In third grade, the family moved to Alaska, where she lived in Cordova and Ketchikan. Upon her high school graduation, she continued her education at Pacific Lutheran University.
Delleen was a loving mother, aunt, and grandmother. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, deep connections, and quiet strength. She dedicated her life to serving others and had an organic, inquisitive nature that made all around her feel special. She was a lifelong learner and supporter of music and art, and shared her talents with many.
A consummate crafter, Delleen enjoyed quilting, crafting, and knitting. She made many beautiful quilts that were also practical. Thinking beyond decorative purposes, her biggest goal was to make quilts that provided comfort and safety to many members of her community. Delleen’s quilts were made from the heart and with scraps of fabric that others thought were too small to make perfect quilts. Delleen served as Community Outreach Coordinator of the Mount Hood Quilt Guild for 10 years. During this time, she created items that provided comfort and security. Over a decade, she donated thousands of quilts, hospital caps, masks, Christmas stockings, preemie caps, and quilts to organizations including Quilts Beyond Borders, Ronald McDonald House, Quilts of Valor, Legacy Mount Hood Hospital, Hospice, Our Just Future, and Fill a Stocking, Fill a Heart.
Delleen carried her love for creating and service through her career in education, which spanned over 40 years in both Washington and Oregon. As a voracious reader, Delleen always felt, “You can do anything if you can read.” This philosophy was her guiding force and passion in all her work. Delleen had an innate gift for seeing value in all children. Her dedication to children extended well beyond the classroom. For 10 years, during her time at Hogan Cedars Elementary, Delleen taught children how to knit and sew. This program, Cedar Weavers, provided a creative outlet for all children and instilled a sense of pride while they learned a new skill. Delleen said, “There is something very powerful about watching kids making comfort for other children.” Many of these Cedar Weavers continued to knit even after their time at Hogan Cedars ended.
Delleen had a lifelong love of music, passed on from her father, Delmar. This passion for music, along with her sewing expertise, was a natural fit with volunteering for the Gresham High School Theater Department. Delleen found joy in creating countless costumes and watching the students shine in the productions. During Delleen’s time at Hogan Cedars Elementary, she found great joy in playing the piano and writing songs for school-wide assemblies and concerts, which continued beyond her retirement.
She is survived by her sister, Marleen Moffitt, of Cordova, Alaska, daughters Tracy Marleau (Doug), of Happy Valley, Oregon, and Carrie Burleigh (Clint) of Portland, Oregon. Grandchildren, Malina, Kendall, and Nicole Marleau, and Marcus and Keegan Burleigh, nieces Cadence Moffitt and Jocelyn Coad, and her aunt, Wanda Moore (Bud), of Grants Pass, Oregon, along with many beloved cousins.
A celebration of life will be held at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 Powell Blvd. Gresham, Oregon, on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at 2:00 PM. The family asks guests to wear their favorite colors as we gather to remember and celebrate Delleen.
In honor of Delleen’s deep commitment to music and education, it is Delleen’s wish to create a scholarship for music students in the local area. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made to the Delleen Kompkoff Band Scholarship at the link provided: https://www.gofundme.com/f/delleen-kompkoff
