Doug was born and raised in Moorhead, Minnesota. His family moved to the west coast in his teenage years. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1942 and married his sweetheart, Esther Adams, the day after he graduated. They settled into a home that Doug built near Fairview, Oregon, where they lived for 50 years and raised their three children: Charles, Carol and Janet. He worked for the Army Corps of Engineers for 30 years, rising from his starting position of ‘Draftsman’ to ‘Assistant Chief of the Engineering Division’ by the time he retired. Always enjoying working with his hands, Doug filled his retirement years with refurbishing Model A Fords, woodworking, minor remodels and many other intriguing projects that had a knack for getting his attention.
Doug is survived by his wife, Esther, of 68 years, his daughters, Janet Norquist of Phoenix, Arizona and Carol Barker of Gresham, Oregon, his nieces, nephews and a myriad of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Warren and Ralph and his sister, Margaret and by his son, Charles.
Doug was a wonderful husband, father, uncle and grandfather who will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his constant encouragement and his willingness to tackle any project to help those he cared about. He overcame many difficult obstacles in his lifetime and was a wonderful example of how much can be accomplished through hard work and determination. He will be greatly missed by all!
There will be a celebration of his life on Tuesday, November 30th at 2:00 PM at Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church (2420 NE Fairview Ave.) in Fairview, Oregon.
Arrangements under the direction of Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, Gresham, OR.
