

Fred Powell died peacefully at his home of many years on Feb 24th, 2012 at the age of 88. He was born on September 20, 1923 at an Army base near Haines, Alaska Territory. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII.
After graduated from Lewis and Clark in 1949, he began his teaching career in 1950 in Lakeside, Oregon as a teacher and part-time principal for 10 years before moving back to Portland. He was a well-known teacher at Mill Park Elementary School in the David Douglas School District for many years until his retirement in 1988. After his retirement he spent many years volunteering at SnowCap.
Fred grew a garden, with berries and vegetables, especially corn, and pumpkins, which the family used each year for Halloween. He was a very caring man, always concerned about the well-being of others, and never stopped teaching. Everything he did was a lesson in some way.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lorene; and six children, Anita and Bill Hamburg, Lynn and Don Biedermann , Christina and Jeff Benzinger, James and Marilyn Powell, Charles Powell, Richard Powell; 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandsons.
A memorial service will be held on Friday March 2, 2012 at Eastminster Presbyterian Church at 2:00pm. In leiu of flowers, donations may be made to SnoCap: PO Box 160 Fairview, OR 97024. Arrangements are under the care of Bateman Carroll Funeral Home.
