It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gary Dale Vinsonhaler, who left this world on June 8, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on January 5, 1948, in Vallejo, California, Gary was a beloved son to Harvey and Carole Vinsonhaler and was raised in the vibrant community of Chino, California.
Gary was a proud father to his eldest children, Gary Dale Jr. and Jodi Ann, from his first marriage to Joanne. In 1974, fate brought him together with Gladys, a compassionate nurse at Pacifica Hospital in Huntington Beach, California, where he was a patient. Their love blossomed, leading to a beautiful marriage in Long Beach, California, that same year. Together, they created a loving family, welcoming daughters Jennifer Gale and Amy Faye into the world in 1975 and 1977, respectively.
Gary was a dedicated union carpenter, known for his remarkable craftsmanship that shaped much of the Portland metropolitan area. His work ethic was unparalleled, and he took immense pride in his trade. As a co-owner of Vinsonhaler Brothers Corporation with his brother Mike, Gary not only built structures but also built relationships, teaching countless individuals the art of carpentry. Even after physical limitations led to his retirement in the early 2000s, Gary remained active, volunteering at fundraisers for the Wamic Volunteer Firefighters and continuing to lend a helping hand wherever he could.
An adventurous spirit, Gary found joy in motorcycle racing at Portland International Raceway, earning trophies and, at times, a few broken bones along the way. He cherished family camping trips, fishing, hunting, and exploring the great outdoors. His insatiable curiosity about history, science, and nature fueled his love for learning, and he was always eager to share his knowledge with others.
Look up the word “friend” in any dictionary, and Gary Vinsonhaler’s picture should appear. He was the embodiment of friendship. To know him was to love him; his laughter was infectious, and his mischievous spirit brought joy to all who crossed his path. He was generous to a fault, often giving the shirts off his back to help those in need. His philosophy of life resonated with the words of Kurt Vonnegut: “The purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved.” Gary lived this truth every day, leaving a legacy of love and kindness.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Gladys; his cherished children, Jodi, Jennifer, and Amy, along with her husband Matthew; his beloved grandchildren, Spencer, Hunter, Wyatt, Devon, Tristen, Bailey, Legend and his wife Kayla, Sage, Ireland, and August; and his great-grandchildren, Reagan, Rhett, and Riley. He is also survived by his sisters, Joyce and Liz, their wonderful spouses and children, nephews Michael and Brent, and a multitude of deeply loved in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins, neighbors, and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his son, Gary Jr.; his brother, Mike; cousin, Jon Jones; and nieces, Sherrie and Jan Marie.
As we remember Gary, we invite all who knew him to celebrate his life with smiles, laughter, and a raised glass. His spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of calling him a friend.
Rest in peace, Gary. Your legacy of love and friendship will continue to inspire us all.
