

Dates was born in Gresham, Oregon, on March 23, 1927 to Shigeta and Sihtsuka Ouchida. From 1942 to 1945 Dates spent time in Minidoka Internment Camp located in Southern Idaho, which held some 13,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. Upon release and returning to Oregon, Dates went on to graduate from Sandy High School.
In 1971 Dates married the love of his life Rita Holcomb. Dates was a business owner of a berry farm. In 1992, Dates sold his business moving to Boring, Oregon. After selling his business in 1993, he went to work for Kaz Tamura as a farm laborer and in 2009 he retired. After retirement Dates worked for his wife Rita who grew cut flowers. They spent 13 years at Gresham Farmers Market selling vegetables, berries and flowers. Dates loved old cars especially his 1969 Blue Ford pickup truck.
Dates is preceded in death by his sister Aiko and his parents Shigeta and Sihtsuka Ouchida. He is survived in death by his wife Rita and 3 brothers Masa, Roy and Frank as well as many extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 13, 2026 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, located at 520 W Powell Blvd, Gresham, Oregon 97030.
Graveside service will follow same day January 13, 2026 at 1:00 pm located at Forest Lawn Cemetery & Mausoleum, 400 SW Walters Dr, Gresham, Oregon 97080.
A Memorial service will be held Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 11:00 am at Redeemer Lutheran Church located at 795 Powell Blvd, Gresham, Oregon 97030.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to charity of choice.
