Janice Karen Tate was born on November 28, 1935 in Deadwood, South Dakota to Albert LaVerne Major and Margaret (Curry) Major. She passed away on February 1, 2025 at the mature age of 89 well lived years.
Janice went to Sandy Grade School and graduated from Sandy High School in 1955. Elvis Presley’s music and poodle skirts were all around! Mom was on the pep squad, Choir treasurer, and editor of the Pioneer Press during her beloved high school years, long before they were known as the Pios!
She earned a scholarship to Beauty School her senior year of high school for which she was very proud. Janice rode the Trailways bus to Portland every day to attend Beauty School. She worked in her cousin Jerry Major’s beauty shop and when the children came along, she always had a chair and shampoo bowl in some part of the house.
John Tate spotted a beautiful brunette across the crowded Sandy High gymnasium. He entered the gym and looked to the right and there she was! He asked his brother Jerry to make the introductions. It took... and John J. Tate of Boring married Janice Karen Major at Powell Valley Mission Covenant Church in Gresham, Oregon. The date was September 15, 1956. Together, they raised 4 children - Michelle Clark, Lori Stillwell, Brian Tate, and Kendra Maddox. Janice has nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Janice was active at church, sold Avon door to door, and of course… painted. She dressed the children to the nines and gave all of them haircuts and the girls perms. Janice always said she did not like to cook... but had some amazing standouts like her potato salad, pumpkin pie and bread, and roast beef dinner after church. She loved to get away on vacation... especially camping in the Mt. Hood National Forest, Central Oregon pine country, and the Oregon Coast.
Janice Tate now has 6 great grandchildren who have attended or are still attending school in Sandy... Firwood Elementary, Sandy Grade School, Cedar Ridge Middle School and Sandy High School.
Janice Tate is survived by husband of 68 years, John Tate, the 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers, Gary and Ronald Major.
