Joanne Dhainin was born June 12, 1929 in Des Moines, Iowa to Ferdinand Philip Dhainin and his wife Gretchen. She was the youngest of four children. She grew up in Des Moines and Urbandale, Iowa. During her childhood she suffered the loss of most of her hearing due to illness, yet she finished her school studies and graduated from Urbandale High School in 1948. Later that summer, she married Gene Garner and started her married life.
In July of 1949, she and Gene welcomed their first of four children, Steven. In June of 1950, came Ted. In 1951, Gene contracted poliomyelitis and went through months of treatment both in and out of the hospital. Joanne faced the prospect of becoming a widow with two small children to provide for. Fortunately, Gene recovered from the disease with only minimal loss of movement in his left arm.
in July of 1953, Terri Lynn made her entrance. The young family enjoyed many adventures camping and fishing, as well as picnicking frequently with the family of her sister, Patricia Cruchelow. She never lived far from her sister, Patty, and they were very close.
As the decade of the 1960s began, a final baby, John, joined the family. Everyone of the kids took their turn bossing him around, but mom and dad always had the final say. Honestly, there are way too many stories to tell about the following three years for them to be included here. Jump to 1962 when her sister, Patty and her husband, Harry, and their family, moved from Des Moines to Portland, Oregon, which started events in motion to bring Gene and Joanne and kids to Portland in the spring of 1965. They settled in Gresham, Oregon, not far from her sister’s house. She saw her kids, Steven, Ted, and TerriLynn grow up and start families of their own.
In February of 1981, Gene felt like he had the flu. When the symptoms didn’t subside, she took him to the doctor and then to the hospital. Gene was diagnosed with Leukemia. Doctors did not expect him to leave the hospital, but aggressive treatment of the disease lead him to recover and live for 11 more months. In January of 1982, she lost her mate of 34 years. He was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Gresham, Oregon.
Joanne and her sister were visiting a close family friend in Arizona, when a man, Glenn Aden, whom she had known for many years, took interest in her. Glenn had recently lost his wife, Jeanie, as well. They developed a long-distance relationship that led to their marriage in October of 1983. Joanne moved to Phoenix. She became stepmom to Pamela, Mark, and David. Pamela and Mark had already left home and had families of their own, but David was still in school. When son, David, left home, Joanne and Glenn, aka the Colonel, became snowbirds, living in Phoenix October to May, and Portland May to October. They spent almost 27 years together until Glenn passed away in 2010.
Joanne moved to King City, Oregon full time after Glenn’s death. She enjoyed hanging out with her children, her sister, and her friends in King City. When Patty’s husband, Harry died, Patty moved in with Joanne. They enjoyed adventures together traveling to Hawaii, Phoenix more than once, San Antonio, Texas. They lived together until Patty’s death in 2021.
Joanne moved into assisted living by herself and lived in the Lake Grove area of Lake Oswego. Her final move was to the Cottages in Gresham, Oregon where she lived until her passing away on April, 19, 2024. And so ends the amazing life of Joanne Garner-Aden, back in Gresham, Oregon. She will be buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, next to Gene. She leaves behind sons Steven Garner, Ted Garner, and John Garner; daughter, Terri Lynn Johnson; stepsons, Mark Aden and David Aden, and stepdaughter, Pamela Bheil, and dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren all of whom got to share in her life.
