

Gresham resident Evelyn Joanne Estes passed away on November 25, 2010. She was 89. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 2 and Friday, December 3 from 10 am to 5 pm at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 4 PM on Saturday, December 4 at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery.
Joanne was born November 23, 1921 in Severy, Kansas to Dan and Harriet (Taylor) Mitchell. The family moved to Oregon in 1936. Jo graduated from Franklin High School where she met her high school sweetheart, Charles “Chuck” Estes. They were married on October 31, 1942.
Jo loved being a homemaker. Her home was always beautifully decorated and arranged with matching furniture, styles and colors. Jo also loved to garden. Her favorite flowers were fuchsias, impatients, rhododendrons and azaleas. She had a greenhouse and grew her favorite flowers from cuttings. Jo loved to sew. She was a skillful seamstress and would often alter any items she bought at the store so her clothing would fit perfectly. She was also talented at all kinds of needlework including knitting, crochet and embroidery. Jo kept her home stocked with Oreos and cookies for her grandchildren and she always had Hershey bars and Milky Way bars on hand.
Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck, her second husband, Mac Carpenter and her brother, Myron Wayne Mitchell. She is survived by her son, Mick Estes and his wife, Sharon; grandson, Dan Estes and his wife, Sarah; granddaughter Katie Arnold and her husband Michael; and three great-grandchildren, Jakob Michael, Natalie Elizabeth and Madison Michele Arnold.
